Kidney donor?!

Question: My best friend is in need of a kidney, which I am more than willing to give her. I'm 48 and she's 49. She doesn't want me to do it for fear of something going wrong, but as I told her, I can't just sit by and do nothing. Does anyone know what's involved in finding out if I am compatible?

Its a very long process so start doing the testing now. My hubby has had 2 kidney transplants. it starts with blood tests...lots of blood tests to see if you are compatible. then there are specific xrays to see if your own kidneys are in good shape. there is a long history and physical to see if you are healthy enough to donate.
Now with all that being said let's talk a bit more
If you are NOT compatible with your friend there is a new great program started by a Dr. here in town. If you are willing to donate but are not compatible with your friend you are asked to donate to a stranger and a stranger compatible with your friend will donate a kidney to her. Its called something like passing it thru (there was a movie that a gift was given and they were supposed to pass something of that gift to another etc etc.) I know I don't have the right words but you get the gist of it so everyone wins in the long run.
You are an awesome friend to want to donate to your friend. Congratulations and good luck with your plans!!.. After you all get started with the compatibility process you will be on your way.Go with your friend to her Dr. or call her Dr. and tell him about your desire to donate and he will get you started on the process. Her insurance will pay for all your testing etc and hospitalizations. Good luck. Plz send me a note and let me know how things go.

you have to first get a blood test and see if you match her then you have to see if your kidney is close to the same size if not it wont fit or will be too small. Next when you get your blood test back you also have to check if you may have anything that she can catch like std's not saying you have any .Ask the doctors if you have anything wrong with you that would prevent you from being a potential donor and what the chances are of you both getting through the surgery assuming everything matches and just deside from there.Hope it works out for you two . GOOD LUCK!

talk to someone in the transplant unit of the hospital..or to a social worker if your hospital doesn't have a transplant unit..you will need lab tests blood and tissue matches, a psychological test { to make sure you fully understand what you are doing} and maybe a few more things..Bless you for being so generous and I hope your best friend accepts your offer and regains her health if you are a good match..
