I've probably only seen 1 or 2 cases in my microbiology lab and I've been at this for 30 years.

Group B strep is frequently isolated from the vaginal tract. We look for it during pregnancy so that treatment can be initiated before delivery. Group B strep can cause a nasty case of meningitis in a newborn.

The bacteria that cause a lot of UTIs are generally from the intestinal tract (E.coli, Klebisella, Proteus, Entercoccus (also a Streptococcus),etc.).

**Is it possible for Strep B to cause a UTI? Sure. It's an opportunistic pathogen, so if it gets into the urinary tract, I'd say it could cause an infection.

**Is it probable? I'd say the odds are against it.
(But never say NEVER and never say EVER).
Most likely because there's just not enough of it to start an infection, much less hang on in the face of the body's defense mechanisms.

To the previous poster:
Do not assume she's talking about Staphylococcus. She's talking about Group B Strep (very specifically).
She knows whats she's asking - its a good question.

Hope this helps!

your answer is staphylococcus not streptococcus, but to answer your question. yes, but the real answer probably lies in the form of how you are keeping that good hygiene. after urinating wipe from front to back. in regards to uti's from sexual contact be sure to urinate to help flush out the ureters after sexual contact and that goes for both of you. drink plenty of cranberry juice not the concentrate stuff. by the way ALL HUMANS HAVE STAPH AND STREP VARIETIES ON AND IN OUR BODIES which normally isn't a problem, but in most cases staphylococcus usually causes uti's where streptococcus causes respiratory infections and throat infections. hope this helps.
