I get about 6 outbreaks of hsv-1 genitally a year minimum - and the average is only supposed to be one every two years!

Since they were mild I have put up with it so far - I can't get anti-virals here in the UK easily at all so I have started to take l-lysine and zinc which are both supposed to help - they did hundreds of studies on l-lysine in the 80's and they proved it did reduce the number of outbreaks. It is an amino acid, and you can take zinc along with it. You need to take at least 1000mg of l-lysine a day to make a difference though, apparently, so I'm giving it a go.

I also started with an OB yesterday morning (when I rushed to the health shop to get the lysine) and I took a dose of valtrex the moment I started to get slight tenderness, way before the blisters appeared, and although the outbreak was at the point where the blisters would have come up within an hour or so, and there was already a lump, it went down and seems to have gone, apart from the nerve soreness. So I'm thinking maybe just episodic doses of valtrex are worth a try if you take them soon enough - I can't afford anything else. If you're only taking valtrex a couple of tabs at the first symptom of each outbreak, and that helps, the outlay for a pack may be quite a bit but it works out pretty cheap over time.

I have a problem with cold sores and I take L-liposene, it's in the vitamin section of the store and it really helps and not that expensive.

You can use carmex and abreva. These lip balms are medicated for the herpes virus, cost about 1$ per tube, and can be used on genital herpes as well.

Also, if you use the generic rx acyclovir, most insurances cover it and without insurance at places like walmart or wherever it shouldnt be more than 30$ or so.
