Sing your heart out despite what others say, do scales, sing songs, maybe youre out of practice, and practice as we all know, makes perfect.
Drink tea with lemon in it, drink warm and thick soups. These will really soothe your throat.
If you smoke or are somewhere where there is a lot of smoke, this really damages your throat, especially during a cold when it is at its most vulnerable.

Try a warm glass of milk with honey. If you don't like warm milk, tea with honey. It's the honey that smooths the throat! Good luck and Merry Christmas!

You need to rest your voice and try not to talk at all. And whatever you do don't whisper thinking that it will be easier on your voice. Whispering puts more strain on your vocal chords than talking or singing.

Boil fresh ginger in water for about 5 minutes. Drain the ginger and drink the hot water. Add honey to it if you don't like the taste.

Hope this helps!

I would first make sure this was only a cold that you had. I have a family member who has 'Silent Reflux', which is the same as the regular 'heartburn' kind but without the pain. When it flares up, she loses her voice much like you describe. You could ask your doctor if this is ongoing. Also, this same family member has been checked for 'Paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction', which is a condition in which one's vocal cords close when they should open, etc. If this has been going on a while, it's worth asking about.
