and lots of times they have deals where u can get the meter for free...but realize strips average bout $1 each and are sold in packs of 25, 50, or 100 usually.
and a box of lancets are about $13 for 100. u need those to poke your finger.
and the strips do have an expiration date

Hmmm. In my state, you can just go to the pharmacy and ask them for a meter and strips. You only need a prescription if you want insurance to pay for them. Go to the drug store in your area and ask...

You can get them at the drug store or Walmarts but if you're an adult getting Type 1 dibetes would be rare (called LADA).So you really shouldn't worry .Just ask you doctor to do a routine screening once a year.

Umm, you can get the meters and strips at walmart or other pharmacies otc. I am borderline hypoglaucemic and while I dont check all the time, I do frequently. Meters run anywhere from 20-100$ and strips run from abou 40-100. It just depends on the brand.

You only need an rx if you want insurance to pay for it.

I got a $10 meter and $22 strips (50) right off the shelf at walmart. No prescription needed.

In addition to the good advice already given pertaining to getting a meter and strips, may I suggest learning more about prevention. It's not about simply low carb and sugar free diets. It's more about the types of carbs and a low animal fat diet that you should be concerned with. There are a number of great resources out there. Since adopting a blend of the following diets, my blood glucose has come down to normal and I'm off the medications... completely. Here are the links to good health:

Daily exercise and eating lots of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables has reversed my diabetes from having to take medication just to keep my average blood glucose in the low 100s to a current 14 day average of 88mg/dl (4.9mmol/l). Not only does this diet reverse the effects of type 2 diabetes, it is an excellent preventive measure to take as well... for all sorts of health issues.
