"Serious" Diabetes?!

Question: Maybe I am being foolish and have been wrong my whole life, but is there a such thing as "serious" diabetes? I always want to correct people who ask me if I have serious diabetes, and laugh at their ignorance and tell them that there is no such thing. I mean, it is ALWAYS serious, and you can take care of it poorly, but it doesn't mean your diabetes is "serious", it means you have poor control. Especially with type one, your pancreas is useless, one person can't have a less useful pancreas than another....What do you think?

you are correct. IT IS ALL SERIOUS.

people are, frankly, idiots. look at the average american that bought it hook line and sinker that shrub won the presidential election not once but twice. and we sat still and ate sh*t...

so, again, people are idiots.

just ignore them and take care of YOU. live a good life that is the best recourse!

You are right.
All diabetes is serious.

Keep on education the masses. It's part of our job as people with diabetes.

May be they mean if you have developed the effects of it like ratinapathy or kidney disorders or things like that. You are diabetic so you have the knowledge of it but people who do not have it and do not want to educate themselves usually talk like this.

Medically, there is no specific category for "serious" diabetes, however not all diabetes is the same. Some people only need to adjust their diet, others require large amounts of medication. Some people do have what we often term to be "brittle" diabetes, which is often very unpredictably reactive to insulin and can lead to both high and very low glucose levels, even with careful management.
But yes, you are right, all diabetes is serious, it's a big risk for many complications and other diseases both in the short and long term (especially long term). I think that many people don't appreciate how many problems the disease can cause and how difficult it can be to keep it under good control, so I would just say "yes" if anyone asks you if diabetes is serious.

I am a type 2 (adult onset) diabetic and I can tell you that ALL (several different kinds by the way) diabetes is serious. The problem is many (maybe most) diabetics have no SERIOUS symptoms so people have a tendency to not take the disease very seriously. For a long time the diabetic can get away with that attitude and then they have SERIOUS kidney problems, eye problems, amputations (is that serious enough for you) circulatory problems and a host of other very undesirable problems.

It is true that some people have higher counts than others but it is ALL SERIOUS and left untreated or improperly treated will get worse.

Just for your information, women sometimes get a transient form of diabetes when they are pregnant. It usually goes away after they give birth.

Wish I could get rid of it but giving birth is not in my plans LOL....

You have all the correct information. Diabetes can be a serious disease but it also can be managed well and people live long, productive lives if they do. When someone asks you if this is "serious" - I would come up with some pat remark for this such as "all diseases are serious if they are not managed well" or any other one of your liking.

every disease can be serious ....here is a group trying to find some cures....http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/
