Hello,

(ANS) I was a smoker myself for a few years back in my twenties and I managed to give up through sheer will power. No! I'm not suggesting you do the same as me for a minute!

However, what I do suggest to you is that smoking is normally used to compensate for some kind of situation such as stress, distress (i.e. when upset), or at times of boredom, or is always after a meal or with a pint at the pub, etc.

In other words smoking is either a social habit, i.e. I smoke because I'm in the pub with my mates who are also smoking etc. Or linked (associated) with certain emotional conditions that are difficult or challenging. So smoking is a crutch of some sort or a comfort blanket of sorts. Smoking helps numb out a persons deeper emotional responses too, because if you breath less you also feel less.

**To quit smoking is extremely difficult, because the use of tobacco is habit forming i.e. is a physical as well as a psychological addiction. The longer you have been a smoker the deeper the addiction thus the longer & harder its going to be to stop the smoking habit.

However, these days there are FAR more methods & tools to help a person shake off the curse of smoking. such as Nicotine patches to reduce the craving feelings.

TIPS!!

No.1 Try to avoid social situations were you might come into contact with other smokers, I know this sounds hard but if your really serious in stopping smoking it might involve doing such things.

No.2 Avoid situations were you might be a passive smoker or be forced to breath in other peoples second hand smoke. Because just the smell of other peoples smoke might ignite your own craving for just another ciggy?

No.3 Write down a list of how much money you might save if you stop smoking, smoking is an astronomically expensive habit these days.

No.4 The more you save by not buying a packet of fags, put this money away into a savings account and when you have quit totally give yourself a well earned treat. A day out or a trip somewhere, a meal with your wife or girlfriend etc. This gives you some more motivation to give up as you will have something to work towards.

**There is no getting away from the fact that stopping smoking is a battle of your will power over your craving. I found in reality it took me a good 6mths from my last ciggy to feeling that I had released myself for good from the grip of my smoking habit. You will really know you have succeeded in quitting when you go into a room of smokers and utterly hate the smell thats a true sign of success!!

Good luck, Kind Regards & seasonal wishes.

Ivan

Don't buy them.

believe it or not you that feeling starts to go away because the nicotine is out of your body within 5 days i think its all in your head after that. keep it up

i wish i could i'm smoking 40 years , just try your best thats all you can do

chantix...and or gum

ok, so I was trying to quit and bought a book called "How to quit smoking the easy way". It didn't work for me, so I gave it to a friend.....who read it and immediately quit smoking....then he gave it to another friend, who also quit....now, 3 months later, I have 8 friends who have all quit thanks to me and my book....yet I still smoke.....hehe...but it might work for you!!

When you want a smoke,go and clean your teeth and use a REALLY strong mouthwash. You won't fancy one after that.

Nicotine gum!! buy yourslef some nicotine gum... they sell it in some pharmacies...
its called Nicoderm or Nicorette

Get a huge bag of lollypops and mabye even childrens dummys, when you feel like 1, put the lolly or dummy in your mouth and do something else. Sounds strange but have heard it works. Just make sure you brush your teeth all the time.

I gave up over two months ago but I just hit the exact right mindset straight away and have not craved a single cigarette, so not sure if I can help. I just realised that smoking actually does nothing for you. All the reasons you find to continue or to explain your cravings are all the results of chemicals due to the addiction. You don't feel better during or after a smoke, you feel worse all time you aren't smoking and smoking returns you to normal.

One thing, don't think you are giving up smoking, you have stopped smoking. If you think have given something up you will miss it.

Lots of people find the Allen Carr method to be very effective though (his approach is similar to what i tried to explain above, but he'll be much better at it :) ).

Best of luck.

Keep your mind occupied so your not thinking about having any! also get rid of any items which may remind you of cigarette's..ash trays, cigarette lighters..e.t.c

Let your friends know your giving up smoking so they can encourage you to stop and think of the reasons why your giving up and how it will benefit you now and in the future!

plus work out how much money you will save! and think about what else you could spend your money on...don't give up sweetie! Pete x

Eat loads of sweets. Your expanding hips/thighs will make you forget about smoking.

Do not cut down, just quit them all together. Set yourself a reward. My boyfriends reward was, he'd still have his girlfriend. So he quit :-)

the three minute rule.
if you need a *** just leave it for three minutes
