No you are not close to diabetes with one blood sugar reading.
Your A1c is pretty good. It is not a diabetic reading (5.4).
Do you have any other symptoms of diabetes?
Excessive thirst, numbing or tingling of the hands and feet, light headedness - just to name a few.
You are fine.
Have you considered the lady diagnosed with a blood sugar reading of 99 may have been on medicines and yet had a high fasting blood sugar amongst having multiple symptoms?
You need to take more readings and go see a doctor if you are really worried about being diabetic.

Fasting Blood Glucose (Blood Sugar) Level:

The "gold standard" for diagnosing diabetes is an elevated blood sugar level after an overnight fast (not eating anything after midnight). A value above 140 mg/dl on at least two occasions typically means a person has diabetes. Normal people have fasting sugar levels that generally run between 70-110 mg/dl.

?In diagnosing diabetes, physicians primarily depend upon the results of specific glucose tests. However, test results are just part of the information that goes into the diagnosis of diabetes. Doctors also take into account your physical exam, presence or absence of symptoms, and medical history. Some people who are significantly ill will have transient problems with elevated blood sugars which will then return to normal after the illness has resolved. Also, some medications may alter your blood glucose levels (most commonly steroids and certain diuretics (water pills)). The two main tests used to measure the presence of blood sugar problems are [1] the direct measurement of glucose levels in the blood during an overnight fast, and [2] measurement of the body's ability to appropriately handle the excess sugar presented after drinking a high glucose drink.

Your A1C means that your average bg has been around 106 for the last 3-4 months. That is on the high side of normal. Ask your doctor for clarification.

In the meantime - if you are overweight, lose some- a loss of 5-10 pounds can do a lot towards normalizing your bg levels. If you are sedentary, get up off the couch and start walking 3-4 days a week. If you eat a high carb diet, cut back on the carbs.

Scared of what? Becoming diabetic is nothing to be scared of. It's just a lifestyle change is all. Besides, you aren't even close. Read the page on glucose tolerance that I gave you on one of your other questions. Stop worrying, for Pete's sake... you're fine. If you want to do something to put your mind at ease, get one (or both) of these two books. If you follow either plan, you're chances of ever becoming type 2 diabetic are practically none.
