Can someone infected with Hepatitis (B, C, D) be a health care worker (doctor, p!

Question: I have a friend who is interested in the medical field but he is infected with hepatitis since birth. The infections is benign and it does not cause any symptoms. He is unsure whether he can work in the medical field fearing contaminating others. If he can work in the medical field, is there any restrictions?

Hi,

Yes health care workers can have Hep B,C,D. It is transmitted through blood and body fluids. As a health care worker they would not be exchanging body fluids hopefully. Restictions depends on the employer. Do you think he would legally have to reveal he has Hep.... , I am not sure on that one.

Tell your friend to go for his DREAM!!

Encourage him and support him to obtain his desire.

yes

If that is okay, so criminals can be police too.

Chances are excellent that he can NOT work in a situation where there is direct patient care. He most likely would have to answer questions about this, and/or be tested if he were going to work in the United States.

A job as a Pharmacist doesn't appear to have that kind of restriction that I know of, but again, it is a very good possibility.

He should be fine to pursue a medical career. Everyone practices "universal precautions" to protect provider and patient from blood born pathogens. He could check with the licensing board in his state if he would feel better though.

my cousin is hiv pos. and is an rn at hurley hosp. flint, mich. i think you could pursue your chosen career. good luck

Legally yes

Yes he can.... there's no reason to disclose his diagnosis based on his job.

If he's looking for some work considerations, ie not taking care of patients with certain disease.... then he'll need to disclose this info to his boss etc.

Hep C is never benign, but in some cases can be halted through a nasty 24-48 treatment, depending on the Genotype with some strong anti-virals. In my support group for Hep C we have many people who are in the medical profession. Hep C is less likely to be spread by casual contact than the others as it a blood transmitted form of the virus. I just finished 48 weeks of HEP C treatment and 6 months after treatment ended I am still clear and it is not detectable in my body. My doctors don't seem to be alarmed by my Hep as they are always willing to dish me out a hug and kiss when i Have my monthly appointments
