I've had the taste of metal..?!

Question: The other night, I put in some medicated eye drops, and had an allergic reaction. I was rushed to the air hospital becuase my air cavaties were closing, and I was begining to hyperventilate. At the hospital they were able to slow my body's reaction down to the medication, and eventually enduce a temporary coma, so my body can breath with a breathing machines help. I came home from the hospital early this morning, and still can't get the taste of metal out of my mouth. Does anyone know the cause of this? Or if it's just relative to my reaction to the medicated drops..

Well metallic taste is part of an allergic reaction. I'm not a doctor, but I'm an asthmatic with allergies. I've read that that metallic taste is part of a reaction, and that is generally accepted to be the case. I also believe it because I have experienced it. It's horrible. It's like having a mouthful of dirty pennies or something. It shouldn't last forever.

Perfume/cologne causes it for me as do certain odorous cleaning supplies.

BTW--glad you're home and doing better.

I dunno what caused it.
Feeding tubes will do that i think, but I guess you didn'thave one of those.
If they did anything that might have scratched the inside of your mouth or throat i think that could cause it. or maybe you have an mouth ulcer that you didn't know about.
It's probably not something you should worry about too much, although i guess that could be annoying to always taste metal.
It will probably go away soon, but if it doesn't you should talk to a doctor.
I would chew gum, it might help mask the mettallic taste.

Certain medications can cause a metallic taste in the mouth. Find out what they gave you in the hospital and do some research on the side effects of each medication.

I know what you mean about eye-drops causing a bad taste. I had eye surgery and kept tasting something horrible for the next few days afterwards. I finally figured out it was the eye-drops causing it.

Your eye's tear ducts run into your nostrils. So you are actually smelling it even though it feels like it's in your mouth.
