Should diabetics recieve foodstamps to help with the cost of healthy food?!

Question: Has anyone ever noticed the cost of your grocery bill when you try to eat healthier? Good high figer oaty cereals are like 4 or 5 bucks for a small box vs a nice sugary cereal jumbo box for the same price. Lets face it you have to pay more money to eat better. Then we all wonder why so many americans are over wieght and have health issues.

My husband and I are both type 2 diabetics. I am disabled and he is retired, but works part time at our local food store.

We are on a special diabetic diet. It cost in our area about $125.00 - $140.00 a week for the two of us to stay on this diet. It is very hard on people that is on Social Security and working part time to manage, but we do. My husband's life depends on this diet. If he doesn't watch what he eats, then his kidneys will fail. He already has stage three renal failure, with stage 5 meaning complete renal failure.

Lettuce in our area is $1.49 a head. We use about three a week. Our dressing is $2.00 a bottle, we use 2 a week. Milk is between $2.58 - $3.99 a gallon. We use 11/2 gals. 1% milk a week, and 1 gal. lowfat buttermilk a week. I buy 3 lb bag of chicken boneless chicken breast a week at $6.99...etc.

I don't think anyone but the lowest of income should be on food stamps, even though we could really use them sometimes. My husband gets really upset when he sees certain people, even young age people coming in the store with a food stamp card. They are more able bodyed to work than my husband, and they are working and still get food stamps. I think our system is broken and needs to be fixed. Someone needs to start an investigation!

My sister is a widow woman, age 67. They give her $10.00 a month on her food stamp card. My husband says some of those people come in there with $700.00 - $800.00 on their food stamp card. They also work. How is this possible? I think they are cheating our goverment and they are getting away with this!

I'm very sorry for venting, but this is a subject that boils my blood! Those that really need the help can't get it and the ones that doesn't, seems to be well supplyed. Even with the help, they have more, but they sure don't eat any healthyer. You can tell by their waist line and the food they buy.

Actually, if America stopped eating many problems would be solved. See, during the time of our grandparents, even our parents (I'm 26) portion sizes were much smaller. Soda was considered a treat and you didn't just get it whenever you wanted. If people just ate what is necessary and not just eat because it tastes good or they are bored then the obesity problems in our country would decline. Look at pictures of people from the 1920s...not so many fat asses then b/c those people didn't eat so much and actually got off of their butts and worked...hard!

No, the government has no money left. They are already 9 trillion in debt.

Hell no. You can eat better and it can be cheaper, you just have to prepare foods from scratch.

No, that's ridiculous. My food bill has dropped since I began to eat healthier. High fiber cereals are full of calories. You need to move over to the produce section where the really good food for diabetics is, and/or buy bulk foods like some of the grains and nuts. Since switching to healthy raw fruits and vegetables, my diabetes has reversed to the extent that I no longer have to take Metformin. It's been over 12 days, now and my average BGL (including fasting and post prandial) has been 89mg/dl. May suggest more research into what a diabetic should eat to reduce or eliminate their need for drugs?
