I know it's hard, and it's got to be especially hard since you're not heavy. When I was diagnosed with GD they gave me a ridiculous diet that I tried to follow, and I had a terrible time. So what I did was learned more about it and made up my own diet.

1st of all ... they shouldn't be restricting your calories if you're thin. I was a little heavy, and I did not count calories at all. All you need to do it count carbs, and watch when you eat them. When you get up, eat 15 carbs. It has to be a small amount because your breaking your fast and carbs are a shock to your system. But I was always extra hungry in the mornings ... so I would have the same meal every morning. I would have 4 scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese mixed in, a tall glass of V8 and a tall glass of milk. Then I would have another 15 carbs at my next meal and then the third would have 30. Meals always had 30 carbs and snacks would have 15. They told me to do meal, snack, meal, snack, but sometimes I would do meal, snack, snack, meal, snack ... just as long as you don't have two meals in a row. You want at least 2 hours between meals and snacks. And I would eat every two and a half hours. I would eat more than 6 times per day, and as long as I kept careful tabs I could do that. And if I was hungry in between feedings I could eat something without carbs, like a hot dog, and it wouldn't affect my blood sugar (which means it won't affect the baby) And if you are able to exercise you can eat even more. I found out if I walked a mile to the store and bought a king size snickers bar and walked back I could eat that for a snack and my sugars would be fine. Exercise lowers your sugar level so you can eat more. You want to test your blood sugar constantly, so you know what effects it. You can experiment carefully if you keep close tabs on your sugar.

Make sure you have a little protein with each meal. Not only will it help keep your sugar down, but it will make you feel more full. Just watch, some processed meats have additional carbs (like salsbury steaks)

And believe it or not, with all that I still lost weight. I never had to take medicines and did not go hungry. The only time they give you medicines is when your sugar levels aren't staying within range. Yes, if you're thin your baby can still come out heavy. That's because at a certain number of months your baby's placenta releases a hormone that reduces the effectiveness of the insulin your body produces. It's because the baby needs more sugar at that time in its development, and that gets more sugar through to the baby. But it causes your pancreas (the organ that produces insulin) to work triple time, and not everyone can keep up. Like you and me :o)

If you need more help, please feel free to message me. There's no reason for you to be hungry, those dieticians are taught to give a strict diet and not to fully educate you. You need to learn these things. It's much better for your baby to control your sugar by diet, rather than having to take insulin.

Good luck!

Was it explained to you that you should be eating 6 small meals a day ? If the child weighs 3 pounds now and you are due January 27 you will not have a fat baby. I was not able to gain weight with my first child and was told as long as the child gained weight she would be fine. The child always gets
the nutrition first. You should also be seeing an Endocrinologist for the diabetes.

The last thing you need to do is to start using insulin. If you want to control your blood sugar (and help your baby), cut out all sugar and severely limit all starches in your diet. Eat plenty of protein-rich foods and lots of green vegetables. MIlk has a lot of sugar in it, so eat cheese instead. Go easy on bread, grains, cereals, pasta, white potatoes, etc. Eat enough to satisfy your hunger, but make sure your diet consists of high quality foods.

I know how you feel, i had the same problem when i was pregnant. The main reason they do it is because your sugar levels are not good for the baby. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do but follow the guidelines the doctor and dietitian gave you. Im not gonna say that i followed the calorie guideline cuz i didn't. I was like, I was always hungry when they first put me on the "diet." I did follow the food guideline though because that is the most important thing in order to maintain your sugar levels. Best of luck to you and your baby!!!
