Enough with these people scaring you. She only risks death if she has been doing certain drugs. First, Alcohol; second, a class of drugs called Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, etc).

Heroin withdrawal will make someone wish they were dead;but, it will not physically harm them. Cocaine withdrawal will lead someone to feel incredibly depressed;but, it will not kill them.

To re-iterate, only those two drugs can cause death or physical harm. They do so because they work on GABA receptors in the brain, relaxing agents we all have. The receptors become dependent on these drugs to continue working after a while, hence, no alcohol, no GABA. Anxiety, tremors, seizures, death can take place.

Otherwise, drug withdrawal is hell;but, people will survive it. Opiate withdrawal will not cause death, it will cause extreme nausea, headaches(the worse headache you can imagine times 10), anxiety, incredibly tense cravings, etc. You should convince your friend to get professional assistance. If she cannot or will not, convince her to wean herself off.

The problem with this is she may change her mind if she does so; which is why she should have medical assistance, preferably an inpatient facility. They will do the same thing. They will continue to give her whatever drug will bind to the receptors of the brain her drugs have been going to. They will wean her off;but, if she's in an anti drug environment with people helping her as she weans off, she's more likely to stay off the drugs for a while, and hopefully forever.

E-mail me and tell me what type of drugs she's been using(if you'd like). I figure you mean she's doing opiates(painkillers), as you said Narcotic. If that's the case, it will be hard as hell to quit cold turkey. It is almost impossible, she needs to be weaned off so she doesn't let cravings/physical hell suck her back. If she tries to quit opiates (if that's what she does) cold turkey I'd bet $1000 she'll go out and get a fix. It is a very, very rare occasion one quits opiates cold turkey.

At very least have her go to an outpatient facility. None of this sounds appealing to someone going through drug hell;but, professional treatment is the best bet this "quitting" will be for a long time or forever. Very few people can kick an addiction on their own, if anyone.

Tell your friend things will get better if she sticks with the idea of quitting,it will suck for a few months;but, she'll feel happier than she has in a long long time if she makes a few months; and it will be easier to resist the addiction. . Good luck, once again, feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions, ajm48786@yahoo.com.

Be VERY careful! Your friend could go into withdrawl, Delirium tremons, seizures and even die. You should really take your friend to a rehab center where they know how to deal with those things! I commend you for wanting to help and your friend for wanting to quit, but it can be very dangerous.

Your friend really needs professional (medical) assistance while detoxing or s/he could die.
