Question: and can a person have a normal a1c and still be diabetic ....or does he compare his numbers or what?

An A1C test below 7 is good control. If yours was 5.4, you are fine. There are also blood glucose tests and urine test that can be done as well. You sound fine.

The A1c test gives a number based upon the average blood sugar readings in the past 3 months.

If you have a couple very hi test results it can be the beginning of diabetes or something else that may not show up on the a1c yet.

Go see a doctor.
I wish you the best.

This test is used to measure your glucose level within the past few months. If your diabetes is controlled well then...yes you could get a normal reading when they do the A1C test on you.

This is not the test that is normally used to diagnose diabetes. If you have a high reading then they will probably want to do a glucose tolerance test on you.

I don't anything about that test but I had a test to see if i was diabetic. They gave me this real nasty tasting glass of orange syrup to drink ,then take a blood test. This procedure was done a hour apart for I think 4 or 5 different times.

Every few months, your doctor can perform an HbA1c test, which measures your HbA1c. HbA1c is a compound created in your body when excess blood sugar sticks to a protein in your red blood cells called hemoglobin (Hb). The higher your blood sugar, the higher your HbA1c value.

HbA1c is formed over time, so the HbA1c test results give you a picture of your average blood sugar control since the last test.

In people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c value is somewhere between 3.5% and 5.5%. People with diabetes have higher HbA1c values because their bodies have difficulty managing their blood sugar levels. So a healthy goal for most people with diabetes is under 7% (or the goal set for you by your doctor).

Remember, diabetes is a very individual condition so work with your doctor to maintain your best health.
