Am I really diabetic?!

Question: I have had 2 fasting tests which came out quite high, so my doctor recommended the glucose test which again came out high indicating I was diabetic. My Ac (long term bloods) came back at 5.6 (good control), I never shown glucose on the urine stick and all my readings on the meter are average. I am curious because doctors seems to equating obesity=diabetes ... how do they know that we don't all have high glucose as we get older? A lot of websites refer to obesity as a given cause and yet don't provide any evidence whatsoever - to my mind that's just plain lazy or worse still incompetent.

Apparently the pancreas can only make so much insulin per pound of body weight, so the more you weigh the harder it has to work and bla de bla bla blaaaah.....I still think someone in the medical profession has seen a whole lot of market potential for diagnosing fat folks as instant diabetics. That way they can charge em for check ups once a month, bill em for the cost of Metformin, and even bill em for the little blood test machines, batteries, chips and tester strips. And its even possible that the machines could be pre programmed to give out high readings? who knows? If I was a billion dollar corporation Id see the profit potential and Id probably rig the machines if i could see it was worth billions in tester kit sales around the world.

That is a very good question. It seems with those figures that the doctor could decide either way. Maybe you should get another opinion before starting any treatment your doctor may advise.

Look at sign and symptoms.

Well that is why they gave you the fasting test to make sure. They didn't just look at you and say okay your overweight so you are a diabetic. they tested you. No all overweight people are not diabetics. You had to been having some symptoms to make your doctor want to test you and see the results.

It sounds like the doctor has given you at least 3 tests. I do not think that he is saying obesity = diabetes. It can be a contributing cause. Once some people lose weight, their diabetes goes away. It is not true for all people. It sounds like you are a diabetic and your wishing you weren't. Don't be in denial of what he/she says. Listen to what they have to say in what or what not to eat. My brother is a diabetic. My Uncle is a diabetic. Do you have diabetes in your family? It can also be genetic. My Dad has been testing high blood sugars lately too. He is on the verge. He has to watch what he eats. He is doing pretty well. I do know some who were overweight and diabetic, and they either controlled it with their diet, no meds., or once they lost weight, they no longer had diabetes. I work in the health care field.

May God Bless you and give you wisdom, prosperity, and good health in the coming years.

This means you are just becoming diabetic. You insulin is no longer handling the glucose in your system, but you don't have any damage to your kidneys (yet). Your liver is sabotaging you. When you fast, your liver is releasing stored fuel. Most of us prediabetics and diabetics have a bad fasting level, but while we're up and about, we run fairly normal. After years of lots of sugar and pumping out insulin, the insulin receptors get gummed up. So, while our body continues to make insulin in type2 diabetes, it can't work properly because it can't attach to the receptors.
This happens because of weight and age. (with age, our pancreas will produce less insulin). Anyway, I hope this info helps a little.

The glucose tests are one way of determining whether or not you are predisposed to diabetes. Loosing weight would definately help but so would exercise. But genetics plays a big role in whether or not you have diabetes. If your parents, aunts, uncles or grandparents had it you will probably have it too. Weight effects the insulin production in your system. If you eat lots of sweets and starches, such as potatoes, pasta, these things turn to sugar very quickly and breakdown fast so that it goes into your system very quickly.
When I was pregnant they will give you a glucose screening. They decided to have me take the test 3 different times when I was pregnant with Michael. The reason is, is that some females will develop diabetes only when they are pregnant. My son was born 3 weeks early and weighed in at 9lbs 12 oz. If this happened to you then you possibly could have diabetes. I was told that if I had continued to have him at full term he would have come out weighing over 12 lbs. I never tested positive for it but one of the side effects of gestational diabetes is that the babies come out a lot bigger then a woman with a normal pregnancy. Most stuff out there is very confusing sometimes you get that answer or this answer. The thing I would tell you is that if you feel that they are wrong then go to a different doctor. Or if you feel that you haven't been getting all the facts go back and talk to your doctor about. They should be able to tell you one way or the other and the reasons behind their diagnosis. Also they can test your blood. Maybe that is what you need is to get blood sugar tests so that way you are more comfortable with the way things are going. And GOOD LUCK. Diabetes if not taken care of can really destroy your life. I have seen people lose legs over not taking care of their diabetes.

Simple question, simple answer. If your A1C was 5.6, your average blood glucose for the prior three months was 122. You are borderline diabetic. Not too bad, but still diabetic. This just means that if you stay on your present course, you're going to become like the rest of us. Here's a chart that shows the relationship between average BGL and A1C: http://www.rajeun.net/HbA1c_glucose.html

You should watch your meter carefully. You said your readings are "average"... that's meaningless. Compare your readings with the chart on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tol...

Obesity is not the cause of type two diabetes. Lousy diet is.

If you want to get your numbers down where they belong and keep from sliding down that slippery slope, you'll jump on the health bandwagon, as I have, and start eating a better diet, lose some weight, and go for a walk every day. I've been diabetic for 5 years and finally discovered what I've suspected all along. It's not so much the weight, it's the diet and lack of physical activity (which bring on the weight). Here are my numbers since increasing the natural foods and quitting the diabetes drugs: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Dail...

What ever the result, you should listen to your Dr.
