Since you don't mention your age, medications, other health problems, and fitness level, I'm going to assume you're young (below 30), unmedicated, don't have health problems, and aren't overweight.

You may be experiencing palpitations. I, in fact, experience exactly the same symptoms as you. My heart stops for 2 seconds, then goes "BAM", speeds up, then slows to normal rate. Frightening. Irritating. Even terrifying.

All my EKGs have been normal. I have been to a cardiologist for a Holter Monitor, a device you wear that gives a 24-hour EKG http://www.sads.org.uk/holter.jpg, and I had an echocardiogram. All results were normal, even though I experienced palpitations during the tests. My blood potassium was slightly elevated but not significantly enough to cause arrhythmias.

You may want to read more about palpitations at
http://www.medicinenet.com/palpitations/...
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-p...
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/...

You may want to keep a chart of your palpitations, including the time of day; what you were doing; whether you had just eaten/drank and what it was; and (if you're female) where you're at in your menstrual cycle. (Sorry if you're male!) Sometimes the symptoms have a pattern that will emerge if you write them down. (For example, they always occur after you eat or drink, or when you're anxious or mad.)

If these palpitations continue at 6 times daily, you may want to ask for a referral to a cardiologist. There are many tests a cardiologist can perform http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiology_... to make sure you don't have any heart damage causing these symptoms.

Yep, I've got a normal EKG and occasional arrhythmias. My EKG is only abnormal DURING the weird heartbeat.

What you are describing is a 'skipped beat', but what usually happens is that you have an 'early beat' so that there is a longer time until the next beat. And then you get a "hard beat" and everything returns to normal.

Of course only your doctor can diagnose what's going on with you, but I'll describe my experience with it.

Everyone's hearts does a flipflop every now and then, some people notice them more than others. Me, I notice all of them. I get more if I am tired, stressed, menstruating or ill.

However, every few months I have an arrhythmia that lasts 15-20 hours, instead of a few seconds. This is when I let my doc know. But there is not much they can do but wait until my heart decides to convert back to normal. I have what's called Atrial Fib, which means the top part of my hard just quivers instead of pumping normally. For me, it's a totally benign condition that's just annoying.

It's only dangerous if it lasts longer, and then I become at risk for a clot. But if that ever happened, my doc would give me blood thinners and reduce that risk.

ekg's can be normal if you arent having the symptoms at the time, and this can be very frustrating. you need to wear an event monitor. it is a small monitor you wear for 30 days. you mash a button and it will record the "event". you transmit it to a heart center that will analyze the rhythm over the phone. excellent monitor for this very reason. a holter only records for 24 or 48 hrs. if you dont have any symptoms during this time, it is money wasted. good luck.
