People not understanding some STDs.........?!

Question: I admit...I watch Porn videos and time & time again I see no use of condoms(except when it's anal sex). These people think that they're protected if they "pull-out".

I'm in the Army as well & hear soldiers talking about having sex with girls they hardly even know!
I say this to them alot.."Don't say nothing when you get an STD!"
Their usual response is.."That's what condoms are for!"

But in REALITY condoms don't protect against all STD...like Genital Warts...all you need is skin to skin contact with the affected areas & you got yourself an STD....

They say 2/3 of adults in the U.S has an STD...I already contracted Genital Warts(which doesn't show if you have an good immune system). And I plan not to get anymore because I only had sex with 1 person(my wife) & will keep it that way.

My Question: Why don't people actually know about STDs FULLY(other than just HIV)? It's the CDC's plan to keep us safe from them, they need to education EVERYONE about this..on the real!

Absolutely agree with lindsey and RayeKaye.

Another issue, at least in the U.S. is that the sex ed in our schools have gone to an abstinence only program. Pretty much kids are taught that they should not be having sex - the only way to not get a std is to be abstinent. And to further scare them, if they are taught anything at all, they are taught that condoms don't protect you completely (no mention that if used correctly it does protect over 99% for certain STDs) They are not taught specifics of safe sex or how to protect themselves from the different diseases. They are not even taught how you get these diseases (witness the tons of questions on yahoo answers: I kissed a boy, can I get HIV?)

There is so much misinformation out there -- we have let sex ed be hijaaked by the religious right that only believes in abstinance; well, that is all well and good in a utopian world but the majority of teenagers are going to have premarital sex and why isn't it a good thing to teach how to protect themselves?

And while the CDC is a fantastic organization they are still a gov't run agency -- if the gov't only wants to fund and teach abstinence then the CDC cannot go against it.

Sorry, that is my soap box.

well.... let's not forget the Herpes virus here..... so many people have cold sores or Herpes simplex virus I. if you have a cold sore or are about to get one, you can pass it along without knowing it by giving someone oral sex. There is no cure for herpes.

I used to be sexually active but not anymore. The risk is too high to contract something. I now respect myself. I see no point in being used by some guy ya kno. but if i was in a serious relationship that would be different.

I agree with you 100%! It is sad to read some of the questions posted here as they show that many people still don't know the basics of how many STDs are contracted.
Maybe the sex ed classes in school are not doing the job? I don't know what we can do except try to educate those around us until the word gets out!

Education is widely available; unfortunately...many people choose to believe the fantasy that bad things only happen to other people. In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say "just this one time" and not use a condom than to be responsible and protect yourself and your partner. And, as you stated, condoms don't always protect against all STDs, anyway. They break, they fall off...they fail...frequently.

*I also want to mention that schools shouldn't have to take the main responsibility for educating young people about the risks involved with being sexually active. Parents need to step up and talk to their kids. If nothing else, provide them a book or at least a pamphlet with photos of the ravages of STDs, along with the statistical probability that THEY WILL BECOME INFECTED if they think with their genitals instead of their brains.

I get up on my soapbox every once in a while and say, if people would stop sleeping with everyone they meet and act like the intelligent humans we are instead of merely sex crazed mammals, we could get rid of all STDs within a decade. Too bad not everyone agrees with me that we are much, much more than human animals with sex drives.

some people don't even know what an std is. education and research is available, people who want to be responsable and protect themselves should reasearch them. don't forget about oral and genital herpes they can't always be protected with condoms and they don't protect against everything. some people are ignorant towards them until it actually happens to them. some people don't get that it can only take one time to contract something that could be with them the rest of their lives or something that has no cure. i think i may have one of the worst, genital and oral herpes because they are painful and itchy at the same time. don't forget some religions don't want people using condoms because they prevent child birth and natural reproduction or something like that. most people i think again are ignorant and think it won't happen to them but stds can happen to anyone who has any kind of sex, specially if they are not in a committed relationship.
