Why does beer give a automatic cough, when it hits the windpipe wrong ?!

Question: It has something to do with the windpipe, or lungs ... I'm just trying to get a better understanding.

1 time at the Tower Theater, I saw Dave Chapelle doing a live stand up comedy show, and while walking down the aisle ... I got a sneeze in my cough after taking a little sip of my beer.

Then tonight, I was down to the last part of my 40 ounce, and I got this cough that feels like my throat is sneezing, has anyone else ever had this problem ? ( why, or how does it happen )

I'm guessing it's because, I drink beer like water, and don't realize that it's not that settling in the throat/windpipe/lung area ... not to yell ... I'D RATHER YALL GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ... hahaha - Thanks !!!

It's probably the carbonation. Drink slower... and breathe out before sipping. Don't know why but this works. I get hiccups from carbonated drinks a lot and when I remember not to gulp air and breathe out, I don't get them.

Anything that goes down the wrong tube will make you cough. It is not just beer.

It has nothing to do with beer itself, it's the liquid going down your windpipe instead of your esophagus.

Try drinking the beer standing on your feet, instead of on your head!

beer? I think any thing that goes down the wrong pipe will cause a cough, if you didn't cough you would probably drown and die

yup. it is probably going down the wrong "pipe".

peristalsis is the digestive track moving in waves. when you swallow, it basically starts that motion.
Your "throat sneezing" is just that motion.

When you chug, you are sending a carbonated beverage down something that is already in motion.

maybe the aroma has some sort of vapor or the alcohol and scientifically our lungs excrete alcohol that's how it leaves the body thru the lungs also so maybe thats why, i think you should cut down on the drinking, HAPPY NEW YEAR!lol
