Often times, bronchitis is a non-fatal result of an infection. Antibiotics or antivirals with supplement corticosteroid treatment is often prescribed with little complications. However, there are times when a person is diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Commonly smokers have decreased their ability to move air in and out of their lungs to the point that their lungs simply spasm in result of excess mucus production; hence, bronchitis.
Fortunately, bronchitis itself is not contagious. Again, the underlying condition, commonly and infection of some sort, is infectious. It is important to remember to cover your mouth when you cough; not cough into your hand, rather, your shoulder or sleeve; wash your hands often; and drink plenty of water while ill.

Acute bronchitis is caused by a viral secretion (after a cold in other words) and causes overproduction of mucous and coughing. It may last several days or weeks. If the virus is still active it is contagious and it would rarely be fatal unless it developed into something else. If there is fever for 4-5 days or a lot of wheezing and difficulty breathing, or you cough up blood you might want to see a doctor.
