Are breast cancer lumps supposed to hurt?!

Mostly cancerous breast lumps don't hurt, but this isn't a hard and fast rule; I delayed going to the doctor for several months, giving myself the excuse that I had heard that a cancerous breast lump wouldn't be painful, and mine was.
I will never know if my breast cancer would have been less advanced if I had got it checked out sooner - maybe things would have been the same, but I wish I hadn't taken the chance.
Most breast lumps aren't cancer, and most cancerous breast lumps don't hurt. ALL breast lumps should be investigated as soon as possible.

initial stages, no. Later, it will.
They can hurt if they are near sensitive tissue, but the lumps themselves do not generally cause pain. If you are feeling tender spots in your breasts, then you may have swollen lymph nodes, especially if the spots are in your armpit.
That being said, if you have found lumps in your breast and have ANY doubts about them, go to a doctor NOW. Better to be safe than sorry.

It could be a cysts they hurt and they can be found any where on the body.
My story is the same as lo-mcg's. And the moral of the story is, if there is/are a lump(s), whether or not they are painful, if they don't go away in 2 weeks, have the doctor look at them.
What I thought were smooth fluid filled cysts, my doctor immediately perceived as having an irregular border and hard lumps. A trained physician can tell a lot just by their experience.
Breast pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer.
Most likely, your painful breast lump is a benign cyst.
However...you cannot ignore a breast lump. Go to your doctor and have it checked out. S/he will probably send you for a mammogram and an ultrasound.
