I have a heart murmur. Found it a year ago and I was really scared. My doctor was really freaked out at first because he thought the murmur could have infected something, but it didn't so I am ok.
I play golf year - round, I play varsity at school and during the off season I play for a competitive league. I run with my brother a lot too. I was scared because I didn't want to be in the middle of a round and something would happen to my heart. I went to my cardiologist and told him I was worried and he said there is nothing to worry about. But just to make me feel better, they did a bunch of tests and its really not that big of a deal. At state this year, I had really bad chest pains when I was almost done on the first day. I sucked the last hole but it didn't really affect my score. I told my dad and he took me to the ER just to be safe and it was just from over-heating and not being hydrated enough. Next day, played awesome and finished tied for 1st individually. (so in other words, it won't really affect your sports-- depending on what sports you play).
A heart murmur is just an extra sound in your heart beat. Nothing to get too worried about. Just to go to your doctor, tell them you are an avid athlete and you just want to make sure everything is ok :)

e-mail me if I can help you with anything else

Some murmurs are "innocent" murmurs; I have one of those myself. That means they are simply an extra sound when your heart beats, and are unimportant. However, there's no way to know without hearing, and obviously I can't do that. You need to talk to your doctor and find out what YOUR murmur means; everybody is different. Call his/her office, and ask to speak to the doctor's nurse; if the nurse can't tell you what you need to know, ask him/her to get the doctor to contact you.

Good luck!

99% of the babies born have heart murmurs due to the fact their hearts aren't quite developed and, it takes time for the hole in the heart to be covered or, grow in. Some take longer then others.

I remember forty years ago my parents found out my sister had a murmer. They went crazy, going to the University, Cardiologists, etc,
Now days we know a lot more and, thoughts are different. See your doctor, he'll dispell your bad feelings and, let you know how serious you are.

Some children have to have , simple surgery but, not many. He can help you with this better then us.

Well I am 55 and I have one. It was only discovered this year and the cardioligist felt that I might have had it for years!

Is it a problem. At your age I don't think so but best to get a check-up once a year!!

Hope this helps (from an old man!!!!) ;-)
