The phlegm etc is manufactured by your body in response to the infection, so no it is not giving you a clearout as such.
There is one positive note though.
There are about 200 different strains of the common cold, and once you have caught one strain you will not catch it again, because your immune system recognises it and can deal with it.
Therefore as you get older you have less colds.
I think you are getting rid of some of the infection.

You are just getting rid of some of the infection. Once your snot (sorry!) goes clear again you are pratically better.
No, I don't think so. Though it always strenghens us when we get over it of course. But we could easily live without all that stuff.
