My 8-year old has a rash w/o any other symptoms?!

Question: It started on her arms as small red dots which have grown larger and merged into large blotches. It spread to her lower legs and then slowly moved inward to her torso spreading as small red dots which grew larger into blotches. There is slight itching and when scratched feels like a minor sunburn.

The rash does not go above her shoulders, in fact, there is a very defined 'line' which it doesn't go past on her arms and torso. It has started clearing up on the top of her forearm and shins only to worsen in other areas toward the torso.

She has NOT been sick for months. She has NO fever, runny nose, cough, or any other symptoms EXCEPT her tongue is slightly white w/ red dots (like a strawberry). She has not had any new foods, medicines, or been exposed to new detergents, etc. At first I thought it was allergies, BUT now her 5-year old sister has it too.

I've given Benedryl, which gives no help. Aveeno baths relieve the itch. There is only minimal discomfort.

Any thoughts?

Try the skin rash page at the source below. It provides skin rash information for many different types of skin rashes.

Yeah I have a few thoughts on this. Why are you on here and not on the phone to your doctor. CALL YOUR DOCTOR ASAP!!!!!

It sounds like scarlet fever (strawberry tongue is a sign of it) - you absolutely have to get her to a doctor if it is as it needs to be treated or it could have long term effects.

I will say it is hard to dx a rash when you cannot see it. I tend to be very cautious around children with rashes -- there are a lot of reasons for them- some benign and some not so benign. The best bet is that any rash that is spreading should be evaluated by a doctor.

you really should have your kids checked by a doctor, that way you will be sure it's nothing serious. My daughter had similar symptoms when she was around 5, had gotten sick, after the sickness she developed the red rash, is it on her hands or feet? She had hand foot and mouth disease, it's a contagious virus spread from person to person. there was nothing they could do for it, it just had to clear up and go away on it's own, and it did with in a matter of days. Not saying this is whats wrong with your child, I do think you really need to have her checked out. Good luck to you all.
