4 yo g/son has welts all over his body from hair to toes?!

Question: Coincidently the same day he got a plaster cast for a broken arm, his body came out in these welts, like when your bitten by an insect, but 1000 times worse. And they are very itchy. A paeditrician at an ER said it was viral. The next night when the welts started to attack his face, his breathing became laboured so was taken again to ER and was admitted for observation. Was given prendezone for the welts and Fenergan for itching. He comes out every day in the welts on and off, and has a temperature alternatively. No-one can put a finger on what is causing this phenomenom. Waiting for blood tests to come back for some answers. Has anyone heard of this sort of virus....Help

Under Hives at Wikipedia: Hives and Angioedema are similar. Urticaria is hives.

Urticaria: a vascular reaction in the upper dermis (layer of skin), usually transient, consisting of localized edema (swelling) caused by dilatation and increased capillary permeability with wheals. Types are named for the causative stimulus or mechanism and include immune-mediated, complement-mediated (involving either immunologic or nonimmunologic mechanisms), urticariogenic (hives-causing) material-induced, physical agent-induced, stress-induced, and idiopathic (unknown cause). It may be either acute (evolving over a few days or weeks) or chronic (continuous or persisting episodically for six weeks or more). Angioedema is the same physiological response in the deep dermis (skin) or subcutaneous or submucosal tissues. Called also hives.
=======================
Angioedema is related to urticaria. In angioedema, the swelling occurs in a lower layer of the dermis than it does in urticaria (hives). This swelling can occur around the mouth, in the throat, in the abdomen, or in other locations. Urticaria and angioedema sometimes occur together in response to an allergen and is a concern in severe cases as angioedema of the throat can be fatal.

Treatment and management:
Urticarias can be very difficult to treat. There are no guaranteed treatments or means of controlling attacks, and some sub-populations are treatment resistant, with medications spontaneously losing their effectiveness and requiring new medications to control attacks. It can be difficult to determine appropriate medications since some such as loratadine require a day or two to build up to effective levels, and since the condition is intermittent and outbreaks typically clear up without any treatment.

Most treatment plans for urticaria involve being aware of one's triggers, but this can be difficult since there are several different forms of urticaria and people often exhibit more than one type. Also, since symptoms are often idiopathic (unknown cause) there might not be any clear trigger. If one's triggers can be identified then outbreaks can often be managed by limiting one's exposure to these situations.

it sounds to me like he has hives! which is from something he is allergic to.! try soaking him in baking soda in the tub to help the itching!!

I would seek the advice of an Allergist immediately, but whichever doctor you are seeing right now, ask him/her about the possibility of getting an Epi-Pen and the training on when and how to use it. It sounds like a precarious situation with the breathing problems, and you don't want to be caught off guard, if the situation gets worse.

All the best!

I AM NOT A DOCTOR

I'm guessing some sort of allergic reaction. Pay attention to the boys environment and what he's eating...especially if it's something new. Good luck!

Your sons skin is probably having a negative reaction to the chemicals in the plasture-of-paris.

well actually, something similar to someone i knows little girl. but it only happened evrytime she stayed at my friends house, even after they got it fumegated and all bed sheet were cleaned etc.. the doctor said they didnt know what it was.. but the only difference was it didnt get so bad that she had difficulty breathing... maybe its an allergic reaction to something they have given him. i am allergic to lots of things so i get reactions to allsorts.. most of which result in me gettin some kind red itchy bumps.. or swelling, could even be bedmites.. maybe you should suggest to them that maybe one of the medicines is causing an allergic reaction or soemthing like latex?? (from the gloves)

he is allergic to something in the materials used to make the cast. i would bet. cant understand how the docs are missing that. i got a tetanus shot once ,and broke out in hives on one whole side of my body.
