Most cancers are depending on your genetics. This doesnt mean that you are going to get lung cancer because your father did. But you have a higher chance then most. I guess it does also depend on what your diet is like etc, etc. There has been no actual confirmed studies(inconclusive results)showing that smoking can cause any sort of cancer. It may play a part, like when they say on packets of cigerettes that smoking may cause lung cancer.
There is also no real evidence stating that people who have been subjected to smoking(passive) that this can cause cancer either.
Although if you are a heavy smoker or have the occasional I would advise you to stop as it is not good for your health in the long run.
Especially for your lungs(emphxsema), and the heart, being heart disease, and strokes etc, etc. Studies have conclusive evidence that suggests smoking is a significant factor, to cause this. Also heart disease is more likely to be genetics, but smoking can bring on the symptons quicker.
My mother has heart disease and her parents both have it also, my Mum(reformed) and her parents were and still are smokers however my Dad's mum has heart disease, was a smoker, not sure about his dad and my Dad has a healthy heart of a 19 yr old and he is 52 and he is a reformed smoker??
Also My uncle died of lung cancer and he never smoked a day in his life?
Hope that helps you with your question!

Any amount can cause problems. Why do you think that people exposed to secondhand smoke get cancer?

Stop smoking. Get help before it's too late. There are better ways to die.

You're not more likely to get lung cancer simply because your father had it. (There are a few exceptions, but they're not common.)

Current research seems to indicate that even people who smoke a few cigarettes a day (2 - 5) are at a highly increased risk of lung problems. Smoking less doesn't help - smoking at all puts you at the same risk, no matter how much you smoke.

Stay off the nicotine, it's quite habituating.

There is an environmental and a genetic component to almost all cancers, so yes, having a family member who had lung cancer increases the chance you will get that form of cancer.

Get screened regularly.

And don't smoke!

it can kill you

Very bad, and yes there is a genetic side to it. If your dad has lung cancer, it increases your chances quite a lot of getting it. I can't believe you could watch your dad go through that and still smoke. Good luck, I hope you give up soon
