Donating a kidney is much easier nowadays due to surgical advances. The surgery to remove the donor kidney (called a donor nephrectomy) is done laparoscopically. This means that several small incisions are made and cameras and tools are inserted into the abdominal cavity instead of making the old fashioned big incision. The laparoscopic surgery has many advantages including less scarring, a shorter hospital stay (2-3 days average, barring complications), less pain, faster recovery.

If your mom is on a transplant waiting list at a certain hospital, call the transplant coordinator and ask them for more information. They are the experts.

Good luck to you and your mom!

god bless you!!!!!!!!! it is a major surgery. you will have some pain and should be in hospital about 5 days. they will inform you about everything at the transplant center when they do the eval

well what a question, where do i start. first off i gave a kidney to my mother in law 7 years ago and things have gone well for both of us. the cuts are about 1 inch long , there are 4 of them..and one about 3 or 4 inches on your waist line that one can't be seen ....the pain well i won't lie for the first couple of days it hurts like h_ll , make them give you pain meds when you leave the hospital ..they tried to give my Motrin.get some vicodine ... i went back to work two weeks afterwords but the Dr said not to for 6 weeks.....took along time to get all the test done ..you need to push the transplant coordinator to get every thing done as they are really busy and the wheel that squeaks gets greased..good luck and god bless...
