Are you on a high protein/low carb diet? (if so... mention it to your doc. and he'll probably tell you to stop)

Muscle milk! A fellow lifter? Anyway... do you supplement with creatine? (That'd be something you'd want to cease entirely, creatine breaks down to creatinine which the kidneys have to clear). Decrease in protein intake may help lower that nitrogen, but may not affect creatine levels... you sure thats not creatinine levels? Usually serum creatinine (the waste product) is used to determine kidney function, not serum creatine.

Also, you mention cancer, maybe CT scans or chemo had done some damage to your kidneys?

Right now I'm going to say you'll probably need to cut out the muscle milk, and go on a low-protein diet (you may want to speak with a Registered Dietitian if thats the case). It'll reduce the workload on your kidneys. I found a link @ national kidney foundation for you on the low-protein kidney diet.

Also keep well (but not overly) hydrated. That may help with bun also but shouldn't affect creatinine.

Lastly, do you have a good amount of muscle mass for your size? If you lift or work out, the reference range may not take that into account properly... your creatinine would be naturally higher with more muscle. (But still not as high as 2.5, thats pretty high).

Thank you so much for both the answers recieved, as it really encouraged me to make some serious health changes regarding food. I have a Drs appointment tomorrow to an ultra sound of my kidneys, but aside from this i'm doing a cleanse for 10 days, I hope this works.... Report It

  • Continue to follow with your doctor. If you have high blood pressure, then take your medication as prescribed and maintain a healthy weight and diet. If you are a diabetic, then kidney damage can occur from uncontrolled blood sugar levels, so you know what you need to do. Ask your doctor what he feels may be the underlying cause of your kidney failure. Some things, if caught early can be stopped, but once the nephrons of the kidneys are destroyed, they do not regenerate. So prevention is the key to kidney disease. Good luck.
