I am going to assume that he knows what he is capable of eating. I would provide some low GI or low carb snacks for him, as well as some of the regular "treat foods" you were going to serve anyway, and let him chose. He should know how to work in most foods into his meal plan and/or insulin regime.

If he is a diet controlled Type 2 diabetic, he will need to be more strict than a Type 1 diabetic who can match their insulin to their food.

Diabetics don't really need any special foods, just healthy foods that we all should be eating anyway for good health and long lives. 90% healthy, 10% treats is my motto. It's for everyone, diabetic or not.

Some healthy lower carb snacks:

-A handful of nuts
-Celery and carrot sticks
-Pickles (note these are high in sodium, which he may need to watch, but he should know this already)
-Rolls of lean meat with relish or mustard
-Diet Jello
-Diet pop or flavored water

Use brown rice and whole grain bread instead of white rice and white bread.

Choose lean meats and fish instead of bacon and hamburger meat.

Don't automatically add sweet sauces or butter to foods.

Stay away from anything fried or breaded.

Offer salads, and lots of veggies.

Try baking with Splenda, or cut small slices of regular cake so he doesn't feel obligated to eat more than he wants without feeling like he is wasting. A slice of cake now and then should not be a big deal to a well controlled diabetic. A Type 1 diabetic, for instance, can match their insulin to anything they want to eat.

Lastly, remember to have fun! You want to focus on the visit, not the food! Provided your father has had diabetes education, he should have no problem adjusting his meal plan. Just be sure to have some diet soda on hand (and regular soda for low blood sugar!) and you should be fine!

Well dont have stuff with too much sugar in it to start with and i mean you could always just ask him because different people have different things that they can and cannot eat.

You should actually have regular pop in case your father goes really low but some food to really avoid are raisins and food that are really high in carbs for exaple if it is over 100 carbs you probably should avoid those kind of foods. Hope this helps!!

Diabetics can eat anything they want, just have to be conscious about portion control.

All carbs, not just sugar, cause a rise in a diabetic's blood glucose. This means, potatoes, peas, corn, apples, oranges, bread, pasta as well as ice cream, syrup and soda.

Most diabetics allow themselves 45-60 grams of carbs per meal. So just ask your dad what he likes and serve him that. Otherwise, just serve healthy balanced meals, being a little light on the carbs.

Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.

Learn what foods are high in refined carbs... breads, pastas, bagels, doughnuts, etc. and keep them to a minimum. Foods low in refined carbs and high in nutrition are always good for a diabetic. Lots of a wide variety of vegetables, some fruits, whole grains, nuts, berries, stuff like that. A few of the best foods are, V8 juice (low sodium), apples, apricots, whole grain bread, salads, veggie snacks, turkey or chicken breast, etc. If you want to help him and yourself, get the book, "Eat to Live..." by Dr. Fuhrman: http://www.drfuhrman.com/default.aspx

If he's a type 2 diabetic, tell him you know a guy that was type 2 for nearly five years and finally found the formula to get off the medication... Mr. Peachy. See my diabetes info page linked under my profile for lots more info.

I'm assuming your father has Type-2 Diabetes, because if he had Type-1 you probably would have grown up when he had it and seen what he eats. In any case, you should ask him what he enjoys. One thing a lot of Diabetics resent is other people trying to limit the food they can enjoy unnecessarily. If your father is in good control, he can probably enjoy almost any food as a non-Diabetic.
