Have you had glandular fever?!

Question: If you have...

What did the doctor tell you to do... get lots of rest, or stay active?

I've been hearing both from friends, doctors and other research so I'm a bit confused.

I have indeed had glandular fever (mono for Americans & Canadians), and strep throat at the same time.

I don't know where you heard the active thing ... you are definitely supposed to rest. I don't know how you could do anything else - I could barely get out of bed. Certainly when you're better (which could take 6 months if you're unlucky), you should excercise to get back in good health... otherwise it'll drag on forever as lethargy and weakness.

Until then, please just sleep as much as you can and rest rest rest. It's no good pushing yourself... you CANNOT push through mono, it's debilitating and exhausting. Just do what your body tells you when you're sick... sleep!

Hi,
I am a doctor..

I would advise you to rest a lot..

Glandular fever is a viral infection associated with a high fever.

It's also known as infectious mononucleosis or kissing disease (long ago it was realised that the infection was passed on through saliva - for example, by kissing).
Causes

Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus

Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. This can attack only two types of cell in the body: those in the salivary glands and white blood cells known as B lymphocytes (B-cells).

Infection begins in the salivary glands, which release large amounts of the virus into the saliva. The infection spreads to the B lymphocytes, causing them to multiply, and causing the lymph glands to swell and become painful.

Once infected, the virus remains dormant in the body's cells for the rest of a person's life.
Symptoms

The incubation period is between 33-49 days. Symptoms include:
high fever - above 39
