Is there really no cure for the common cold, or is it a big conspiracy?!

Question: Think about it. We can remove cancerous tumours and transplant organs, but we can't cure a simple cold? Is this because of the limitless strains of cold, or because too many pharmaceutica companies would go out of business if there was one cure invented?

I think you're on to something with the limitless strains of "cold". There is no cure for the "common cold" because it is a bacterial infection and what bacteria may make one person sick, may not make another sick. We need to be exposed to bacteria in order to strengthen our immune systems, so we do in fact need to get the odd cold. If we went after individual bacterial strains we would not only be wasting valuable resources on a non-threatening bacteria, we would still never find a "cure" because another bacteria would simply take it's place and cause a different cold in humans. The pharmaceutical companies certainly benefit from people getting colds, but in fairness to them, it is much easier to simply treat the symptoms of the cold than it is to find a cure. The cure is within us already, why improve on nature?

Did they not teach you about viruses in school? Viruses like the common cold mutate so quickly that we can't keep up with them. There will likely never be a cure for the cold, nor for any other viral illnesses, including AIDS.

There is no outright cure, but there is medication for the symptoms, such as stuffy nose and fever

No, its just that there are thousands of different viruses that actually cause the common so finding that works, will probably only work against one of the thousand odd viruses there are.

There are medicines out there that can help relieve some of the symptoms of colds.

the cold keeps changing which is why we catch them over and over, unlike chicken pox, so there can't be a cure because there are so many variations. we can't become immune to them like some other stuff.

there are many different strains of the common cold and every year they change.
Once your body recovers from a cold it is immune to that strain only and since there is many many different strains you get a cold year after year.

As mdyh says - its a bit like the flu virus it mutates to survive. It is not a big conspiracy.

no cure we transufer it to other people it is really fun

It's a conspiracy - there is NO PROPER solution to the common cold.

look curious all such medication in markets are treating symptoms only since there is no treatment for virus at all except for few exception as herbes no anti virus which is the specific treatment while antibiotic is for bacteria and anti mycotic for fungi so as AIDS no treatment but for flue body can overcome it

I think there are plenty of other diseases (real and imagined) keeping drug companies in business.

Treat a cold & it will last 4 days, don't treat it it will last the same time, just drink plenty & rest.

Man is yet to find a cure for viral infection. Small Pox, chicken Pox, Measles, Common Cold, Aids are all caused by viruses.

Treated cold lasts only for seven days and untreated cold can last for a week they say. So there is no cure.

But we can get relief by controlling the symptoms. When a germ enters our upper respiratory tract, my a protective mechanism, we start sneezing so that we can throw it away. But the germ is too smart. It gets embedded into the mucosa line. Then the body secretes fluid in an attempt to wash it away. [ This fluid get thickened when it comes in contact with atmospheric oxygen and become mucus] Then the body increases the temperature in order to heat the germ and kill it.- that is fever. Because the mucus gets thickened in our respiratory passage, we get less oxygen and we get head ache also. This is typical cold. So a nasal decongestant, Bronchodialator, Antihistamine etc will help you resolve your problem. Try steam inhalation you get relief. Salt water gargle it is good. But please have it at least 6 times a year.

This is the 3rd time I have seen a question like this. There are in fact some usable antiviral preparations, they are however just too expensive to be in any way cost effective, especially when you consider that the average Brit gets 7 viral illnesses a year!
