I had the stomach flu, now my sister and dad have it, any ways to prevent my mom!

Question: Two nights ago I woke up puking in the middle of the night every ten minutes with diarrhea and it hurt. a lot. By nine that night I had no energy and was very dehydrated because I couldn't even keep water down, so my dad took me to the emergency room where they gave me stuff that made me feel better.

so now my 12 yr old sister has it
and so does my dad

but my mom doesn't and it would be really bad if she got it because she has to take care of my sister.

are there any ways to prevent my mom from getting this?
and are there ways to help my dad and sister?

I know it hurts a lot and I want to help.

When you say stomach flu - do you mean Gastroenteritis? The best way to prevent the spread of the illness is to have a good handwashing technique. I know it sounds gross but if you don't wash your hands properly after using the toilet and then you touch a glass for example that someone else drinks from they can pick up the bug easily.

So wash your hands thoroughly for at least 2 minutes after vomiting, using the toilet or cleaning up vomit/ diarrhoea.

You can also buy special hand cleansers which you can use after handwashing which help reduce the spread of bugs - like Aqium (ask at your chemist)

Here is a helpful link on gastro in children and how to prevent the spread...

As for helping someone who has gastro - you can purchase electrolyte replacement drinks and iceblocks from your chemist which help replace the salts lost as a result of gastro. Frequent sips of water are best. BUT each have your own drink bottle or glass - no sharing. If they have a temperature Paracetamol will help. And if they have sore bottoms from the diarrhoea you can use Mylanta (the antacid) to dab on the sore bits. I know this sounds gross too, but it reduces the burning and helps protect the skin.

Most importantly, go back to your doctor if you have ANY concerns...

Awww...too bad you guys got this...

Well, the best best way is thorough, frequent handwashing. And using lots of disinfectant on surfaces.

If Mom already has "caught" the virus then there isn't much you can do. It will either show up or it won't. In the meantime she should drink lots of fluids to build herself up in the event she does come down with it.

You sound like a great kid who cares a lot for your family.

Hope all of you feel better soon.

Get the medicine for everyone else and get some for your Mom and she can start now....before she gets sick and maybe prevent it......

Welll, if your dad and sister already have it then she's already been exposed to it times three so she needs to take care of herself, too, and make sure that she does not wear herself out taking care of everyone. Did the doctor say that it was viral or bacterial? If it was viral then you can't get it again and it would help her if you helped take care of everyone. If it was not viral you may get it, again, so you would need to be careful, too. Just make sure that she gets plenty to eat and drink and gets rest. Maybe if it has not affected her by now then it will not affect her but you will have to wait and see.

have her go visit your grandma for about a week!

crack the window a little. so the germs won't flow around everybody.

Infectious gastroenteritis (stomach flu) is spread by the fecal-oral route. You can prevent this from spreading by frequent handwashing, especially after toileting or vomiting.

According to the CDC recommendation, adequate lather time is important. Lather the soap in your hands long enough to hum happy birthday twice. That's how long it takes to wash away the germs, really.
