What could be wrong? I thought it was the flu, but now I'm not sure?!

Question: I have a low fever of 100.1. Chills and hot flashes come and go, and I have a monster headache. I slept for 12 hours last night and took a 2 hour nap, and I'm still tired. I always feel better after I sleep, but then I get worse than before. I'm always thirsty, I've drank a gallon of tea today. I have a dry cough, and aches in my legs and shoulders. I thought it was the flu last night, but I don't feel like I'm dying like I do when I usually get the flu. I can't eat anything without my stomach cramping up, although I haven't vomited. I don't have a runny or stopped up nose, and no pressure around my sinuses. What could this be? I don't want to go to the doctor unless I get worse of my fever gets higher, the insurance company messed up and didn't put me back on my dad's insurance. We're trying to get it straightened out, but we don't know how long it's going to take.

It does sound like the flu. It may take up to a week or 10 days to fully recover. Don't worry about the low grade fever, that's not a bad reading. There's really no fast cure for this. If your fever gets as high as 102.5 you'll need to take some steps to lower that. A single regular aspirin will help along with a shower as cool as you can stand it. But only do these things if the fever goes up. It's been on you for a couple of days it's unlikely your fever will go any higher. Stay with green tea if you can. Only 3 cups during the day, but drink other fluids as well. Try to eat foods that boost your immune system. Blueberry yogurt, low sodium V-8 juice or grape juice. A small portion of baked chicken (easy on the stomach) with a baked sweet potato. (that's natures best anti oxidant vegetable) There are several different flu bugs out this year. Even thought you feel bad it doesn't sound as if you have one of the more severe cases. Rest is good, food, even better. Breakfast should be something light, oatmeal is good with a cup of orange juice.
Also try to eat something green...(I know, yuck) spinach or steamed broccoli with a cheese sauce. Both are loaded with immune system anti oxidants. All you're doing with this is building up you're immune system to help fight what you have.
I thought I was getting the flu as well, but didn't present with the full symptom range. Turns out it's just a head cold that I'm trying to keep in my head and not let hit the chest for a full on cold. It's killing me not being able to hit the gym, but I put such a strain on my body with the workouts and that wouldn't help me right now...I'm on the down side...two more days and I'll be good to go.....stick with it Broken Doll....only a few more days. You'll get through it.....I'll include you in my prayers tonight.

I'm sorry my friend. You need to see a doctor. I remember from one of your last postings about the insurance problem, but how about going through the school nurse? They may be a ble to send you to a free clinic. Your illness has gone too long. You need to see a professional and tell them the whole history.-

I know! That's what I mean. As long as it has gone on, it could be serious. Find a way to see a doctor, please!

There are many different types of the flu and each one has different symptoms. This could very easily be the flu. The flu can be dangerous and people do die from it every year, but you sound like you are young enough to bounce back from it.
I suggest you eat some chicken soup, yes I know you are a veggie person but it is good for you. Instead of tea, drink clear liquids, water, 7-up, Sprite and such.
As for the insurance, if it was their mistake, then they should pay you back for any charges at the doctor's office. GO TO THE DOCTOR.

How are you doing as we speak? I am hoping all is well. If you're under 17, your dad can get temporary insurance through the State. Of course, not sure if you're in the state or country. Some states have county Emergency hospitals that bill you later. By now, you should have seen the doctor. For future illnesses, as long as you don't spit up blood or blood in your urine/stools than you're fine. Its a virus thats difficult to treat without antibotics. You're headaches are due to being dehyrated and all that caffenine in the tea. All your muscles aches and pain is a reaction to all your stress or when your stomach hurts. Your muscles are contracting or squeezing together when you start to have a migrane or stomach pains. Its like squeeze water out of a sponge. Your body is reacting similiar like that sponge. I hope you have gone to the doctors by now. Let us know what it was that you had so it can be passed on to others who may have health insurance issues. My prayers are with you.
