Why wont a virus grow on agar?!

viruses need cells to grow in. Agar is food for bacterial cells, for example. So if you add bacteria to agar and THEN add viruses, then they will grow by taking over the bacteria cells and then lysing them. so what you will see will be plaques on the agar, like holes of cells that have died as a result of a viral infection.
