New question on sleep apnea?!

Question: alright now that ive been told that tonsels and adnoids have nothing to do with sleep apnea, i now have to ask. I'm 20 years old, 6'2'', 175 pounds. Obviously im not overweight. I could use to gain 20 or more pounds. Anyways, it started about 2 weeks ago. I was sleeping and i woke up (sorta) my eyes were still closed but i felt like i was awake. Only problem was that i couldnt move my body was froze. It took everything i had to move again and when i opened my eyes i was gasping for air. Its happened about 2-3 times since. I always feel tired and lazy during the day but dont go to sleep until about 1:00 in the morning and sleep till about 9:00-11:00 in the morning. can someone help me? its kinda scary waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air.

Your best bet is to get a consult with a pulmonologist with a specialty in sleep medicine. With the symptoms that you've stated I don't believe that you have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing during sleep and/or have decreased oxygen levels in the blood. However, I do think that you may have a mild asthma with poor sleep hygiene and additional sleep dysfunction referred to as hyponogogic paralysis. And man is it scary!!! In the original studies that I've seen people who have had this particular problem actually thought that they were under attack by demons who were attempting to possess their bodies. Good sleep hygiene means that you go to bed at the same time each and every night, get up at the same time every day. Even if it's on the weekend. No watching T.V. in bed. No reading in bed. The only thing that your bed is used for is sleep and sex. Also, no caffiene 4 hours proir to sleep, this includes chocolate. No exercise up to 2 hours prior to bed. Try doing deep breathing and meditation before going to bed. If you can't sleep get up and go to another room, turn the lights on for a few minutes, then try again. Before you see the doctor make sure that ou write down all of the symptom that you have been having and take the list with you so that you don't forget anything. Don't let the doctor dismiss you before you get answers to the questions you've written down. Remember that he/she works for you. Good luck.

Talk to your Dr about a C pap (spelling?) machine it will keep you breathing good at night and you will feel better during the day and not need as much sleep as you are getting now.

u may have asthma.

fyi for CPAP u need to do Sleep study. they don't give it out to everybody. and it is not attractive. ur love life can be affected by it.

I am a respiratory therapist, and what you have explained is not sleep apnea. You have actually described several different ailments: Awaking and can't move = paralytic dream or dream paralysis, gasping for air goes along with this. Insomnia would account for the late night/early morning retiring for bed. Sleeping until 9 - 11 would coincide with going to bed late (8 to ten hours is what the average adult your age requires). Tightness of the chest could indicate some kind of airway reaction similar to asthma or some other kind of airway problem. A bronchodilator (albuterol etc.) may help. In any case see your doctor to get properly diagnosed.

This may be a no-brainer, but are you drinking? Alcohol is a respiratory depressant. Avoid sedatives or medications like Benadryl that can sedate you when you sleep. The amount of sleep you are getting is normal for your age. You are actually still growing (men grow sometimes until 22). This means you need more sleep. I'm surprised you don't sleep more. Avoid sleeping on the couch or in a recliner. Do some exercises before you sleep to help you relax. You sound like you are very keyed up. Have you been under increased stress lately? Any of these can cause sleep disturbances and the symptoms you describe. Avoid smoky places and bars, too.

It sounds like your suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This is something you need to talk with your doctor about. ASAP! They can do some very simple testing, and you may possibly need a CPAP machine. This helps keep your airway open when you sleep, and you will feel 100% better and I can promise you, the tiredness will go away!
