Tourettes question - is this normal or is it just me?!

Question: I am a tourettes sufferer with mostly motor tics and the occasional vocal one. Do you other saufferers finds that your tic is dependent on your situation? As in when I'm shaving my legs I get hand tics, when it's quiet at school I get vocal tics, when I'm in an interview or at school I get worse tics than usual.

Is it normal for the tics to be dependent on the situation like that? Do you find that too? Or is it just me?

Both my teen agers have tourettes, my son has minor facial motor tics and my daughter has major total body motor tics.
They have both expressed in the past how depending on the situation, the motor tic they'd least like to occur does.
My daughter has in the past, when trying to suppress her tick while at a restaurant let fly with an item of cutlery or a glass.
The more my kids try to hold them in ,or are stressed out knowing that they are going to be in a situation where they do not want there tics to occur, sure enough the tics manifest with vengeance.
I bought my daughter a drum kit and she says it helps her, if she is getting worked up,or having really bad bouts she goes and has a 'session' on the drums and it eases things.
Wondered if your tics are worse at exam time, my daughter's are really bad, sometimes she can't hold a pen or turn the page on her exam paper.
We also found a lot of other things that set her bouts of motor tics off:
Cold ,Anxiety ,Shocks ,Over excitement, and when there are a lot of people around that she doesn't want them to see her.
My son' are worse when he concentrates or is nervous, at interviews he tends to stick his tongue out a lot.
We found if you are relaxed they are not as bad, maybe if you relax in the bath for a while before you shave your legs your hand tics may subside a bit.

this can be normal.. but please see a doctor as there are medicines that help control these type of symptoms for your illness

I don't know.

That sounds about right surely? It's directly related to stress? The more stress you feel from feeling that you must stay quiet the harder it is?

err hmm hum well err yes yes it is

my friend has tics and she says it does go on the situation she is in,when your trying to be quiet it does not happen and when concentrating it seems worse.its not just you hun and im sure everybody who has tics thinks and feels the same as you.xx

i watched a program about people with tourettes and all of them were exactly like you. there tics depended on there situation. dont worry about it ur not the only one

Tics do vary with situations & anxiety levels. They can disappear when concentrating on an activity like playing an instrument or a sport and increase when feeling anxious or when it feels "safe to tic". My son has Tourettes & I've learned a lot about it from reading info on the TSA website. You should read & learn as much as you can.

While thankfully not a sufferer I would say that it is perfectly normal for the reason that sometimes I have to put my glasses on in order to hear people.

For all you folk who think this is abnormal try the opposite ((non spectacle wearers close your eyes instead) Notice that the voice you are listening too fades and distorts immediately you remove your glasses (as if to clean them)! There is a logical reason for this effect. see below,

Seems as though sufferers can function quite normally when in situations where their mind is occupied as you say shaving your legs...
Stressful situations are another thing..
As well...quiet time in groups..
There's a lot on a Tourettes sufferers mind and it doesn't always get channelled where the person wants it to go...yet...they are good at work requiring detail and their concentration....

My son has this disorder. His tics are more obvious when he does not have a physical release, such as excercise. His tics increase when he is stressed.
