I can relate to your daughter...I have had cold sores since age 11 or so. Presciption Valtrex, acyclovir helps heal it fast. Those over the counter creams don't do much unless using prescription pills with it to attack the virus internally. I have had a cold sore start tingling and take acyclovir and it did not fully form and went away quickly. I use to have cold sores outbreaks about 4 or sometime more a year. This past year I had to have extensive blood work done and they found out my iron was low. I also found out that I had von willebrands disease. Due to this the doctor put me on 3 iron pills per day. Since then this past year i have not had a cold sore out break in six months which is rare. I am not a doctor but, I think maybe you should have her iron levels checked. Also is she taking vitamins?

try Abreva ointment(specifically for cold sores). Could also ask your doctor to prescribe an antiviral drug such as Acyclovir. Could also take Acyclovir topical ointment.

Get a perscription for zoverax (sp?) cream. When she feels the tingle have her use it as perscribed. I doubt a doctor would give a 13 year old an anti viral pill becase the can be bad on you liver.

If she spends a lot of time in the sun use a lip balm with spf 15 or higher. I get them and if I don't wear sun block on my lips I get them.

A few years ago I found a herbal remedy that worked well. It had tea tree oil and a bunch of other stuff in it. I found it as effective as the perscription stuff. Go to a health food store and ask if they have anything like that. It may be better for a child.

Take her to the doctor and see if he will prescribe a daily dose of Zovirax or Valtrex to supress the breakouts from happening in the first place. She should at least have an RX for that to take when she has active breakouts to lessen the pain and the duration. Supression therapy works great for many people. If she's having breakouts this severe and this often she really needs to be careful to not touch them when they have broken and then rub her nose or her eyes or any other mucus membranes or she risks breakouts in other places.
