I have suffered from severe anxiety disorder for almost 20 years. Feeling/hearing your heartbeat definately can be a symptom of anxiety. Xanax is the best med I have ever taken for anxiety. It has really helped me get my life back. I'm assuming a dr. prescribed you the xanax and has diagnosed you with anxiety? Have you had your blood pressure checked? If so keep taking it. FYI - Xanax is amoung the #1 drugs prescribed for anxiety.

If you dont think you have anxiety seek another opinion!

Good luck.

no, i don' t think so.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps one deal with a tense situation in the office, study harder for an exam, keep focused on an important speech. In general, it helps one cope. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder.

Do you feel anxiety when not on them? Most of us can feel a heartbeat when quietly listening, feeling for it.How's B/P?

Anxiety is a combination of fear, apprehension or worry. Heart palpitations can be a symptom of anxiety but do not necessarily indicate the presence of anxiety.

It concerns me that you are taking xanax. It is addictive and I strongly believe (but don't know for sure) that there are better, safer choices. I suspect you are being treated by an older Doctor who is not a psychiatrist. You need to see a psychiatrist about diagnosis as well as correct medication. And no, if that is your only "symptom" you don't have anxiety. Of course if you are regularly taking xanax you would not be having symptoms of much of anything. If you are taking the xanax on a several times a day basis, what ever you do don't just stop!
The drug can have bad side effects if you don't do a slow taper. This is safest under a doctor's (physicist's) supervision. So, go see a shrink. Probably detox from the xanax. See if anxiety symptoms appear over the next few weeks.
