He needs to watch his cholesterol by diet. Everything he eats needs to be monitored. That would mean, eliminating butter, red meats, cheese, eggs, alcohol, etc anything which potentially can be converted into cholesterol. Things like oatmeal and apples are great for cholesterol. They work in helping the good cholesterol do its job.
He also should adopt an exercise regimen. Start slow otherwise it will discourage him. Maybe go for a walk around the block every evening after dinner. And then progress to walking further as time goes by.
You may want to also get him on some fish oil capsules or the Omega 3,6,9 supplements. They help in keeping the bad cholesterol out of the body and help in preventing it from collecting in the heart (I am trying my best to put it into layman terminology). He may want to start taking a niacin supplement as well, start slow, taking it at bedtime. Niacin can sometimes cause "flushing". His body will have to adjust to any changes he makes in his diet, exercise or supplements. Give it time and wait for the results. You will not see them instantly. Good luck - I know you can do it!
I hope this helped.

first you need to understand what 'triglycerides' actually are.
A fasting blood test will normally only measure Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDLs) and call them triglycerides (This is because they contain mainly lipids, in the form of triglycerides). These are only made in the liver and are used to transport mainly lipids and comparatively little cholesterol around the body. These lipids are those manufactured by the liver and are basically excess blood sugars being converted into fat. This is a result of too many carbs/sugar in the diet compared to exercise.

Dietary fats have no bearing on this at all. they are packed into Chylomicrons to be distributed around the body from the intestine. within around 4 hours they have delivered their lipids and been absorbed by the liver. They will not show up on a fasting blood test, unless there is an underlying serious problem.

So to reduce triglycerides reduce carbs, particularly simple carbs, and sugar in the diet and/or increase exercise

If the test was not fasting then these rsults are even more meaningless than those from a fasting test.
