What is a really good source of magnesium for a Stage IV breast cancer patient?!

Question: This is for my daughter who has Stage IV breast cancer that has moved into her lungs. She is in a clinical trial of Ixempra and Xeloda to see if it will bring this down. She has sufferred so much. She is having trouble with her bowels and was told she needed more magnesium, that that was the only thing she was short of in her blood test. She has felt weak and she has been constipated. It is really rough for her. Her oncologist has put her on broths for a few days.

Swiss chard, spinach, summer squash, kelp, halibut, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, black beans, scallops, almonds, tuna, cashews... Go to this link and scroll to the bottom to find a full list of magnesium-rich foods: http://whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nut...

If she is on broths for the next few days, you could consider adding some of these things to her soup. Black bean and squash soup is delicious and high in magnesium - flaxseed can also be added, as it doesn't taste like much and just makes it a bit thicker. Hope she gets well soon.

I am very sorry to hear that about your daughter. I take magnesium supplements for asthma- maybe you should just get some of those? They come in tablet form from most health food stores.

I'm so sorry your daughter is in such pain ..... i truly wish you all the best of health and happiness and a speedy recovery for your daughter.

Amino acid-chelated magnesium and calcium in perfect balance (half as much magnesium as calcium) is the preferred form.

this is available in multivitamin and mineral forms ....... probably the easiest for her body to assimilate would be a powdered mineral form, thus no digestive dramas will ensue.

The chelated forms of magnesium supplements are the easiest to absorb.

Supplements of magnesium should not be taken after meals, since the mineral does neutralize stomach acidity.

Try also, putting a litre of full cream milk into a warm bath and letting her soak in that for 15 to 20 minutes .......... absorption through the skin will still allow her the full benefit of the calcium and protein in the milk without the drama of having to eat and digest while she is so sick. The extra calcium will soothe her aching bones, calm her jangled nerves, ease digestive problems, aid in eliminating headaches and stress too.

Please don't knock it till you try it. i am lactose intolerant and do this as often as i can and it does wonders for me.

All the very best to you and yours?

Also, go get her a liquid version of the multi B complex of vitamins to aid in rebuilding her digestive, neural and immune system functioning ..... very good in combatting stress, so you should probably also take some. Any good health food store should be able to help you. The magnesium will also reduce her stress levels. Foods for you to also have rich in magnesium to reduce stress and aid in constipation are leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, wholegrain breads and cereals and cold water fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting ?

Just want to let you know I will pray for your daughter and your family, she is lucky to have you as a mom. Stay strong for her!
I know that some tea are really good, it's called Yogi Tea healing formula (they have it at the Whole Food store), it's all natural and they have all different kind, I have used the cleansing tonic, it really worked good. Good luck to you!

i'm so very sorry to hear of you daughter's cancer. my bro's mag level was depleted while he was hospitalized for cancer surgery and the docs gave him a supplement of sorts. perhaps her doc could do the same. i hope the trials work for your daughter. she and you are in my prayers. god bless.

The best magnesium (and most bioavailable) is Natural Calm powdered magnesium. It's a mix of three types of magnesium, it dissolves in warm water and doesn't take bad (can be taken with juice after it's dissolved). It gets in the system right away, and many people can tell the difference. Yes, she needs something like magnesium to move her bowels. I would start at 800 mg a day and add a little every day.

What a terrible situation--God bless you for being with her, and I pray for strength for both of you.

She can be rxed a mag supplement. They are also avail otc in lower dosages. I liked this particular which can be mail ordered from the site I will post. She needs to get an idea on dosage though, too much is just as bad as too lil since it is an electrolyte. Mine was so low I had to take a huge amt to prevent electrical issues with my heart, I have a history with af anyways.

Most mag supplements will cause diareah and nausea. It wasnt so bad with this one.

ALSO, a stool softener like colace will help. It is not a stimulant, softener only. It will help and is the only constipation med that doesnt make me feel worse.

She could also try adding powdered fiber to what she does eat and drink

I know I focus on meds, but getting a chemo patient to eat healthy doesnt always work.
