I think it depends on the specialty. Certain specialties attract certain personalities. For example, surgical specialties tend to attract very cocky personalities (i.e. "What's the difference between a surgeon and God? God doesn't think he's a surgeon") but if you're cutting people open for a living, you better darn well be confident in yourself. I'm a neurologist and really wouldn't consider myself cocky (we're sort of like the "nerds" of the medical field. After all, I deal with the most poorly understood organ in the body (the brain) so I am frequently humbled by how complex and mystifying the nervous system is!

i want to be a doctor also but a nice one. yea my sis is a nurse and she said the same thing you just said. its common with th emae doctors though

cuz they make lots of money and safe ppls lives

Yes, I've had a dr. talk to me (the patient) that way. She ask me how I quit smoking, when I told her with the help of God, she said maybe God can help you with your exam too. I haven't wanted to see a dr. again. She was so rude.

well I'm not sure, but Ive gathered that because they were in school for so long they didn't learn many social skills.

I want a cocky doctor. In fact, I would want the most cocky doctor in the hospital. It means that they are sure of themselves and their abilities. You don't get to be that way by being wrong all the time or letting your patients down. You get to be cocky by being right and being the best.

i am a doctor, and reading ur question made me wonder too...but hey,, u ve to give us break. i know the stress i gothrough every day. it took me 8 years to complete my studies, but still i get baffled with new diseases. i work 8 hours a day and still when i get home i am pestered with thought about my patients and whether i gave the right doses and whether my diagnosis was right. as far as cheating on wifes.....believe me buddy, i ve never been more frustrated about this topic, many of my colleagues do it...i think its kind of tension release....the stress really gets to u man..... the last time i ever got a good night's sleep was when i completed housemanship. ever since i am a consultant...i lost sleep
so relax, enjoy.ve a nice day....there are always assholes around, but try to look at the good side

Yes. Lots of doctors are arrogant and act like they think they are God. I guess our culture feeds into that, though. The standards and education to become a doctor are very rigorous, so it must be a huge sense of accomplishment to make it--a certain amount of arrogance is almost inevitable.

I used to have a job where I got psychiatrists in trouble when their paperwork didn't meet the standards. I must admit it was rather satisfying and all I had at the time was a two year Associate Degree in medical records.

Some of the doctors would get angry with me and even yell at me. But it was the policy of the hospital and complaining didn't do them any good.

One doctor I reported got so mad I thought steam would come out of his ears. I acted very calm while talking to him and it was really very comical--he had to know he looked like an idiot.

One doctor I reported was so bad he would later lose his license. Most of them were honestly trying to do a good job and just made a few mistakes here and there; but it made them a little more "human" and a little less "god-like."

In spite of all the times I picked on them--I have had friendships with some doctors, got invited to their houses for dinner, several doctors went to my wedding, I have been invited to their kid's weddings and so on. They are just people like anybody else, but they have very important (and very stressful) jobs with a huge amount of responsibility. I used to be jealous of doctors, but I know I wouldn't really want to go through all the things they go through; I just don't have that kind of stamina.
