Athletes foot is a fungus, Tinea Pedis, NOT a bacteria like one respondant said. It is most commonly spread by walking on floors or in showers/tubs where other infected persons have walked. The link will give more information

Through the sweat off your feet!

You can get it by public showers and wearing other peoples shoes...

It's caused by a bacteria that thrives on moist surfaces...like on shower floors and between toes. That's why it's good to have shower shoes and to keep your feet dry and covered when not actively participating in water sports. Like, between events at swimming and diving meets.

The tinea fungi are all around us. When you have warm damp areas, they love to call it home. Thus, when you sweat and your stocks stay damp, and they are warm because your feel keep them warm, they form a great medium for tinea to grow. The socks keep the feet nice and damp, the tinea grow, and if you wear the same shoes / sneakers day after day, they continue to grow. Eventually, they establish a nice bulkhead in your feet, between your toes.

It's a fungus that can grow anywhere and on anything that is wet (damp) and warm. Locker rooms, wet towels, benches, athletic equipment etc. these are perfect places to spread athletes foot. I once got it on my forearm from weight equipment. It often spreads right off the floor to your feet but you can get it on any part of your body. Anti-fungal soaps and creams can prevent it but once you get it you'll need a week or more to get rid of it with over the counter creams.

clearly by dirty unwashed socks contaminated by dirty unwashed sweaty feet.

The most certain and fastest method of eradicating this problem is to wash the feet thoroughly and apply iodine all over the toes and affected areas (wow! it stings) and wear clean socks (changed everyday)

Cleanliness is the real answer!

Some people mentioned it here, most of the cases would be from public showers. Like in colleges, water slide parks etc.

To avoid catching it, try wearing slip-on sandals. It would 100% protect you.

Athlete's food or tinea pedis is a fungal based skin condition. More info at the source below.
