Why was the bubonic plague reffered to as the "Black Death"?!

Question: There are two variations on why it is called the black death. I found them on wikipedia.
Possible reasons
1. Sufferers skin would turn black due to hemorrages and extremeties would darken due to gangrene. Yuck.
2. Black refers to "glum" or "dreadful"

In late stages of the disease the sufferer's skin would blacken due to subepidermal hemorrhages and the extremities would darken with gangrene.
