I am freaking out! What should I do!?!

Question: When I went to get my 10 month old son out of his crib this morning, he had taken his diaper off. No big deal, he has done it before. This morning, though, he had a bowel movement. It was a mess in there. The scary part is there was poop all over his bottle and his face. I am worried he got some nasty bacteria in his mouth nose or eyes. I have already cleaned him up, but do I need to take him to a Dr? I know all about the horrible deadly diseases that can kill people from fecal-oral transmission. What should I do? Should I just keep a close eye on him, or should I take him immediately to the Dr? Please help!

I have had a similar thing happen; I have called it "One of Mommy's grossest days." Yes, there are deadly diseases that anyone can pick up from defecation, but this is usually from the defecation of others who are not healthy and carriers of diseases, such as hepatitis, etc. As for your son, this is not a daycare situation, but his own fecal material that he got all over him- this won't be the first or the last time this will happen.

But of course there is still a risk of disease from fecal material from a child's own body. For example, if coliform bacteria gets into the vagina of a little girl, she can get a bladder infection from her own fecal material. The idea is that if bacteria get in where they are not supposed to be, the bacteria can spread disease, simply because that is not the place for it, and may grow as an infection in another place.

My advice is to call the physician's office for advice. Also, take his temperature regularly and watch for signs of disease such as red or runny eyes, coughing, sneezing, listlessness, any spitting up or vomiting and loss of appetite.

Diapers are quite easy for children to take off these days. If you are using disposables, you may want to switch brands and reinforce the diaper with good old fashioned diaper pins. If you are using cloth, switch to disposables, put on as directed and reinforce with diaper pins. I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but if it is cool enough, also put pants on the child to help contain the mess.

Good luck- believe me, this is not the first call your physician's office has gotten concerning this problem.

Good luck- calm down and take action.

Call your clinic and talk to the nurse, see what they say over the phone.

I would def call the doctor. You rather be safe then sorry, you know?

mine did it to. one big mess. all over the wall the crib his face and bottle the sheets. you name it it was there. and that was 35 years ago and hes still alive and well!! i think he will be fine !! maybe try putting the diaper on backwards. tape it in the back. thats what i had to do for awhile. and keep pants on him to lessen the chances of him pulling it off!!! im sure all of us as moms have been through this with our babies and noone had died!! dont panic!!

,I wouldn't recommend freaking out. It's not that big a deal. Unless he shows signs of being sick--diarrhea, vomitting, etc., he should be fine. It happens to every child that I've ever heard of, at least once.

Call the doctor.

yea thats pretty gross.. something you really dont wanna wake up to.. but ive heard alot of babies do that by accident.. call your doctor to be on the safe side but im sure he will be fine..
