If you are in the USA. Please add an addition. We just went through this with my father in law and I may be able to help you. He applied for Medicare, Medicaid, and SS and we got it pushed through fast with the assistance of letters from his physicians. I know what you are up against and my heart goes out to you. I assume someone is reading this to you. They will be the ones to help with this.

Not only do you file for Social Security disability but you are also eligible for Medicare once you are determined to be disabled. If you are 100% disabled you are eligible for Medicare health insurance after the waiting period which I believe is 6 months. Sorry, I don't know any financial assistance that is immediate.

National Federation for the Blind. A place to start and a place for resources.

Good luck

There absolutely is a lot of help available to you.

To get resources for comprehensive help just call 2-1-1. That is the emergency number for United Way, which will be able to help you find assistance as well as themselves providing some assistance to you.

Also call your local Department of Family Services.

If you don't have disability insurance, you will just have to wait for your ss disability to come through. I went through the same thing 4 years ago. my employer fired me in Dec 2003 because of my diabetes. My app for ssd was denied. I didn't get disability until 2005 after suffering a stroke. now I can't find work at all. The ADA (americans with disabilities act is useless.

OK, First off you can go to your local DHS OFFICE and try to apply for asststance there in at least getting food. Then you can go to your church and they can see if they have any funds availible there to help you out with your bills. If you are just now getting the process started then you need to make sure that you get a lawyer. Other wise it can take up to 5 years to get them do declare you disabled. If you can't afford a lawer there is LEGAL AID out there that can help you. They will even come to your house in most cases. If not then try to get a frien to take to see them. They will not charge you anything! Also, if you are a VET. then you should also apply for disabilty with them too. My 2nd husband tried to do it the SSI. ONLY WAY FIRST AND NO LUCK. But then he applied for his Vet. Benefits and he got approved with in 2-3 monthes!! He also took the Disability checks from the VA instead of SSI as they paid more money than he would have gotten through SSI. I hope that this has helped you in some small way!! Good Luck!!!!
