Asthma and difficulty breathing?!

Question: Lately I have been having a more difficult time breathing. I have has Allergy Asthma for years now and had been prescribed Flovent 100 and Salbutamol 100 and I went to the doctor and I explained that I have been having a hard time breathing and he gave me Advair 250 (which did not work at all) or Flovent 250 so I stopped using the Advair (I did not use the Advair and Flovent at the same time) and went back to the Flovent. I was fine on the Flovent 250 for a month or 2, however for the last week I have been having difficulty breathing (compared to before) and for the last 2 days it feels as if want to vomit but I dont. I am not sick in anyway, but I have been getting Headaches and when I blow my nose or sneeze I see "stars" pretty much! I should also mention that I am trying to lose weight and am taking Slimquick extreme for about 3 days now (which I have taken before a few months ago and had no problems with). I have no idea whats going on with me!!!

You are referring to the same medication under two brand names. Flovent and Advair are both fluticasone, Advair just has an added ingredient, salmeterol. Salbutamol and salmeterol ARE NOT the same, or even the same class, of medication.

OK. You were on an inhaled steroid (fluticasone 100) and a short acting bronchodilator (salbutamol). You got worse and your doctor changed you to Advair 250/50 which increased your inhaled steroid dosage (fluticasone 250) and added a long acting bronchodilator (salmeterol).

Flovent 250 was the same as the Advair MINUS the salmeterol, so good on not doubling up on it, bad on stopping the salmeterol. It is a very effective maintenance medication.

How often are you taking which medications? Everything you have listed except the salbutamol is to be used on a fixed dosage, almost always twice a day only. None except the salbutamol will help quickly once you are having trouble breathing. Instead, they reduce how often the attacks occur and how severe they are when they do occur.

It would help to know if your Peak Flows have dropped. Do you still use the salbutamol as a rescue inhaler? Do the peak flows increase after? Are you blowing your nose more often? If you have allergies and asthma, and your sinuses are acting up, the asthma tends to flare up also.

Contact your doctor. Only he can change anything and may feel you need to be seen for a better evaluation. If the last few days you have been nauseated, with a headache, are seeing stars when you blow your nose, and are having increased breathing problems you don't qualify as "not sick in anyway". Sorry, I know it may be frustrating, but there it is.

It sounds like your doc had you on a conventional and usually effective maintenance routine with an inhaled steroid and a long acting beta agoninst (LABA). I assume he still had your short acting beta agonist (SABA) salbutamol as a quick "rescue" inhaler, usually up to every 2-4 hours, with instructions to contact him if it does not relieve the symptoms in three or four doses. But it sounds as if you may be having a flare up that might need more help temporarily.

I have little input on the diet thing. In my limited experience anything called extreme is either a rip-off, very temporary, or both. The product site mentions what they claim are high levels of methylxanthines. Some of the sypmtoms you describe are consistent with too high levels of methylxanthines. Theophylline is a methylxanthine used to treat asthma. Are you on theophylline, quibron, or such? Drinking lots of coffee/jolt/red bull or such? Caffeine is another methylxanthine.

Saw this on Oprah with Dr. Oz.... google it, there is plenty to read about. Two of Oprah's audience guests swear by it.

Got nothing to loose by trying it.

sound more like sinus pressure, and post nasal drip...that could cause all those symptoms--including the asthma...asthma is usually joined with allergies, so it's easier to have a sinus infection under these conditions..

Advair is an inhaled steroid and must be taken for a period of time to see its effects. It is not for an asthma attack. It is a preventative, to keep your bronchioles from swelling. You need to see the doctor and tell him or her you did not take the Advair as prescribed. You may need some oral steroids (prednisone) which work faster, to help get you out of this, then start using the Advair as preventative. Good Luck

see a different doctor and get a 2nd doctors knowledge on the situation. some doctors like to use different type of treatments, perhaps yours is just not finding the right one.

Why don't you go to the doctor and get yourself checked out. Your body is telling you something. It does not hurt to discussed these issues with your doctor.

Firstly, PLEASE STOP TAKING THE SLIMMING MEDICINE IMMEDIATELY. My mother-in-law got a stroke under similar circumstances, and she is still paralysed. Thereafter, get yourself a second opinion. Thirdly, for a long term solution please consider Prayanayam. Swami Ramdev Maharaj has cured thousands of people through simple breathing exercises, the programme comes on Aastha channel every day from 5 am to 8 am. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

You have loaded your body with all the antibiotics and steroids. This will increase and give more problem later. How old are you? what is your height and weight? How do you know it is asthma? Generally people confuse with asthma, bronchitis, bronchial asthma and simple breathlessness. You need constitutional treatment. I suggest, please consult a good homoeopth.

Good idea to consult with your doctor who will be the best person to take care of yr problem and guide you when to refer you to the allergy specialist
