Coughing is a major symptom of a respiratory illness. It can be caused by:

Asthma
Bronchitis
Pneumonia
Tuberculosis
blunt trauma to the airway or to the lung itself
allergies
cold

It is hard to say why he is still coughing, but coughing for 3 weeks isn't good, especially if its a hacking cough, and especially if he can't breath as a result.

Is he coughing up blood? If he is, it is a serious concern and he needs to go back to the doctor.

Has he gotten a chest xray? Medication? Diagnosis from a physician? Does he have asthma? Does he smoke? Has he ever had a past lung problem? Has he been in accident recently? Need more information.

*if he is a smoker, he could have chronic bronchitis, which is coughing for a prolonged period of time within a year*

One more thing, if he hasn't gotten a chest xray, i would highly recommend he do so, especially if he has been in a developing country recently. persistent cough is a symptom of TB, and he needs an xray to confirm that. you need to catch TB asap.

In response to the answer about the hot water..the hottest water that we are able to tolerate drinking is NOT hot enough to kill any bacteria. Why do you think water is boiled to make it sterile? And the cayenne pepper, that is one of the WORSE things you can do for a cough, it will only exacerbate (make worse) his cough. If he has an infection in his throat, he needs antibiotics, not hot water and cayenne pepper. Also, carbohydrates suppressing the immunite system is mainly something diabetics should be concerned with, since it reduces the ability of the phagocytes (cells that destroy invading bacterial cells) to do their jobs in diabetics. Did you get your information from a cracker jack box?

Sounds like asthma...have they prescribed him an inhaler?

Has he been in Asia recently? Is he getting worse? MAYBE HE SHOULD SEE A DOCTOR!!

Sounds like Bronchitis. Need an antibiotic to eliminate the virus

take him to the hospital to go check it out becaseu it could be bronquitis

Nobody is medical experts on answers. You need to go to a respiration specialist.
Could be a troath infection.

he got a flu it last for 3-4weeks it happend to me before

It definitely sounds like either bronchitis or worse, pneumonia. He needs to see a doctor and a stiff batch of antibiotics.

anymore symptoms? is their a post nasal drip, weakness, joint pain? this was the number one symptom my dad had back in Sept 2007 check the lower half of his calves and feet for red or purplish marks. if he has any of the above, have him checked for vasculitis immediately.

he most likely has an infection of some kind. he's not going to like it but tell him to stay away from carbs for a week because they suppress the immune system. Hot broth will kill the bacteria in his throat but you have to sip it while it's HOT. There's another trick but it hurts. Sip Cayenne Pepper water. It actually works better than anything I know of. If he can't stand hot, may I suggest some zinc lazenges?

I know this is an obvious question, but did any of the doctors order a chest x-ray? There are a lot of things that could be causing the cough....pneumonia, bronchitis, reflux disease, or a lung tumor.

Go back to (another) doctor and demand a chest x-ray if that isn't their first recommendation.
