Anxiety can be a very hard thing to deal with in your every-day life. I have had an anxiety disorder since I was about 13 - to the point where without medication, I become highly agoraphobic and do not often leave my home or extended "comfort zone". (Estimates say 1/3 to 1/2 of people with social anxiety or general anxiety become agoraphobic in time.)

When I am put into a situation that is different to me, and I feel like there is no escape route, I start to have panic attacks. It's a horrible feeling - severe nausea, heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, chills, jitters... it feels like all I want to do is run from the situation and go curl up under a rock. And if I do flee the situation, it goes away within an hour.

If you talk to your doctor, they will probably either refer you to a psychiatrist or write you a prescription themselves. I have been on a 100mg dose of Zoloft daily to curb the anxiety (it reduces it by about 75-85%), and have an as-needed Rx of Xanax (alprazolam) to take when the Zoloft isn't enough and I am having panic symptoms. The Xanax is effective very quickly (within 15-20 minutes usually) but on its own would have to be taken 3-4 times a day to diminish the anxiety, and it is highly addictive if taken too often, so I use it only in emergency situations.

Good luck! And I hate to use the "r" word but... relax!

Don't worry about things that you can not change. Accept the minor ups and downs in your life with this attitude and your anxiety will disappear. Get involved in your new job and you will not have any time to be anxious. Good Luck.

I am a very anxious person, with a very responsible job and so I sympathise. I use Bachs Flower Remedies "Rescue Remedy" available from Boots. Deep breathing is also very simple and effective. Also, value yourself and accept the anxiety. Once you stop letting it hold you in its grip, it will cease to bother you. Good luck with the new job.

Prozac can help and isn't supposed to be addictive - but have you tried hypnotherapy - it can really help without having to resort to drugs - good luck on Monday.

go to see your doctor

don't stress.
