If it's the stomach flu nothing will stay down for quite a while. The infection lasts many hours. She'll have to go for a whole day without taking in anything, not even a drink.
Once completely empty the vomiting should stop. But she may continue to feel queasy. After about 24 hours, try taking a little water. If that stays down, try a little more, and maybe a single cracker or crouton. Slowly work up to getting some water and food. If after 24hours she still cannot keep anything down go see a doctor. It is easy to become dehydrated during this period, which is where the real danger of stomach flu lies. Make sure she does not perspire, stay cool.
If however she is empty and dry vomiting continues she should go to the hospital, there could be something seriously wrong.

i had the stomach flu before for about...3 days, actually.
I wasn't puking&the other symptom the whole time, but I definitely felt like I would have.

That could be dangerous! Especially if she is not replenishing the fluids in her body- If she wont go, at least go buy her a gallon of orange Gatorade.

Here are some testimonials on how to heal the issue.

GINGER
1/5/2008: gus from elko, nevada writes: "I have been sick with some kind of stomach virus when I found something in a pamphlet about using ginger to help cure stomach pains and cramps. I asked my mom about itand she said she had some ginger root and ginger tea I tried the tea but that just made it worse. I tried a pill with ginger root in it and the pain went away within the hour. you can get ginger root at any drug store without a persciption. Also if you are puking so much you can't take pills try some ginger ale it doesn't have as much ginger in it so it won't work as well, but it could calm your stomach enough to take a ginger pill. take one pill wait 10 minutes and take one more pill. This ginger remedy helps with nausea, really works."

Best of health to both of you

She should really give her doctor a call and ask him.

I went thru it about 3 weeks ago. Yep, I had the somach flu and I threw up for about 12 hours... yeah, fun.... I called my doctor and he said I didn't need to go to the hospital unless I had severe abdominal pain, bloody diahrrea, or a fever. But I don't know what kind of other medical problems your mum may have.

Call an ambulance, they wont make her go if she refuses but they can evaluate her and possibly give her medication to stop the vomiting.

It is possible that she doesn't have the flu. She could have any number of things going on.

You should be able to call a nurses line at the hospital or at your mom's insurance company for advice.

I think 8 hours is within range for the stomach flu.
You're sure it's the virus, right?
