Does the smell of cooked food make anyone else sick...or is it just me?!

Question: I have Fibromyalgia and I am trying to determine of "normal" people get sick at the smell of food. I know my amplified central nervous system includes the sense of smell. So I figured I was not able to handle it because of the FM.

Wow, I get that too, sometimes.

I, too, have FM, and I have times when the smell of cooked food makes me feel completely sick to my stomach. My FM pain gets better and then worse, and I haven't noticed any correlation between the smells and the pain, but I will be watching for it.

I have always assumed it's to do with my migraines, which are chronic. I often have a rotten smell aura that lingers off and on through the entire 24-48 hours of a headache. At those times, it's so bad I have to take Phenergan for the nausea just from the smells alone.

I am glad you posted this. I will pay a bit more attention and see if I can tease out when exactly I have the problems with my sniffer and food. My only challenge will be the fact that a bad migraine tends to trigger a bad bout of FM, and a bad bout of FM tends to trigger migraine.

On a side note, I talked to my doctor about that new drug Lyrica, which was recently approved for Fibro pain. I have been taking it for nearly a week. So far I have had no improvement in my FM, but it has helped with a nerve problem I have in my right thigh. You might ask your doc if you are a candidate for it. Mine said that even if your pain doesn't go away entirely, they are finding that it does calm it down quite a bit for many FM sufferers. I figured that for me, at least, it's worth a try. Anything is better than having that feeling I get where I feel like I am made of glass and that I will shatter if anyone or anything touches me.

Be well.

The smell of cooking onions makes me cough so much I choke

With your condition, you've developed a hyper-sensitivity to chemicals emanating from the cooking. So don't do it! Go on a raw food diet (didn't say it's easy...) fruit basically... it will also clean up your system so you might become less sensitive to the chemicals.
