Did monkey really start HIV?!

Question: A 2007 genetic study suggests that the HIV strains present in the early 1980s arrived in the United States from Haiti in the late sixties or early seventies. It is believed to have arrived in Haiti from central Africa, possibly through professional contacts with the newly independent Congo.

The key facts surrounding this origin of AIDS are currently unknown, particularly where and when the pandemic began, though it is said that it originated from the apes in Africa. A variety of theories exist explaining the transfer of HIV to humans, but no single hypothesis is unanimously accepted, and the topic remains controversial.

DICK did.

Africans did when they started having sex with monkeys. I think atleast that what i was always tought from my dad.

No. They lack the intelligence it would require to genetically alter a virus so it could make the species leap. Monkeys didn't start HIV any more than birds started the flu. Viruses just sometimes are able to genetically mutate to allow them to infect other species than the one they are restricted to at the moment. It's usually because proximity allows contact between the two species where there wasn't before. Viruses and bacteria are just equal opportunity infectors, with a built in biological drive to reproduce sucessfully. There's nothing personal about it, it's just the way things are. And the sort of HIV that affects monkeys doesn't affect humans, most viruses are pretty species specific anyway and we actually don't share a lot of ours with monkeys or vice versa.

yea. a scientist was studying a disease that monkies had, and withdrew some blood from one. when he was transfering the blood onto a glass slide, he cut his finger, causing him to drop the slide, and some of the blood from the slide got into his cut...the story of HIV.

no that just a myth, but no one knows how it started otherwise there would be a cure.

According to a book that was written by the head of the CDC. Yes HIV started by monkeys. A race of people was having sex with monkeys and that is what started the HIV virus. When I find the book I will give more information in it.
JED

the virius known as HIV did come from a monkey. to the monkeys it's harmless, but when this certian tribe of africians started having sex with this certian type of monkeys, drinking their blood, and eating them in one of their religious ceremonies it got transmitted. and in the humans it was not compatible and it mutated. then it passed human to human.
i wrote a report on AIDS once for school.
and that person that said viriues can't jump species is wrong. it might just effect the species differently but it can be done. (rabies, mad cow disease, bird flu,...) Hello!!!

The correct answer is they are not really sure where HIV came from. They do believe that it came from Africa. They also believe that the a virus called simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) was the ancestor of the HIV virus. The virus made a trans-species jump into humans and was discovered in 1983. There is a road called The Kinshasa Highway that runs throught he Congo in Africa that was nicknamed the "AIDS Highway" because after the road was paved the virus spread like wildfire.
